He stated that there needs to be enough ballots in the county to <br />handle that traffic, and City Hall in Redwood City can be quite far for some communities. <br />Mr. Church stated that he would appreciate feedback from the Council and staff to do <br />what is necessary to ensure everyone gets the message and can vote. <br /> <br />Council Member Aguirre stated that parking at the County Center and City Hall can be <br />difficult, so there needs to be appropriate accessibility for the benefit of the voter. <br /> <br /> B. Recognition of Boys and Girls Club Finalists - Youth of the Year. <br />Youth being recognized: Roman Loza, Angelica Salto, Jocelyn Arellano, and <br />Adriana Fernandez. In attendance were: Michael Jones, Senior Unit Director, Mayra <br />Arellano, High School Director, and Esmeralda Ortiz, Assistant Unit Director and <br />Jeffrey Gee, Mayor, who presented certificates of recognition to each of those present. <br />Mayor Gee introduced Ms. Ortiz, who spoke about the Boys and Girls Club and their <br />work to help students access resources and feel driven towards higher educational <br />goals. <br /> <br /> C. San Mateo County Mosquito & Vector Control District Report - Kat <br />Lion, Board of Trustees Representative for City of Redwood City <br /> <br />Ms. Lion introduced Dr. Peavey, the new District Manager for the San Mateo County <br />Mosquito & Vector Control District. Dr. Peavey spoke about control of vectors in water <br />as part of the effort to control West Nile, and other strategies to keep mosquitos and <br />other vectors under control. She stated that last year was the biggest year in California <br />for West Nile virus. Council Member Howard asked about fogging and Dr. Peavey <br />replied that it is the act of spraying a very fine mist of pyrethrin at night to target adult <br />mosquitos. She stated that it is a very short-lived mist that is not detrimental to humans. <br /> <br /> D. Swearing in of Incoming Boards, Commissions and Committee <br />Members – (two members) by Silvia Vonderlinden, City Clerk <br /> <br />City Clerk Vonderlinden swore in Ms. Connie Guerrero, Planning Commissioner, and <br />Daniel Lewin, Board of Building Review Committee member. <br /> <br />6. PUBLIC COMMENT <br /> <br />Lee Callister spoke about the cost to the City of maintaining Docktown. He noted that <br />the City received $1.4 million in annual rent while saying that it's costing $1.5 million to <br />maintain. He spoke about ways to make Docktown break even. He asked about some <br />of the costs the City previously reported. He stated that the City has not lost $1.5 <br />million on Docktown and could possibly make a profit. <br /> <br />Michael Lane introduced himself as the new Chair of the Housing Leadership Council of <br />San Mateo County. He expressed support and commendation for what the City Council <br />is doing to address the housing crisis. <br /> <br />Peter Norris stated that he is a homeless veteran living at the Maple Street Shelter. He <br />stated that he has received a Section 8 voucher and there is such a stigma against it <br />that he can't find a place that will accept the voucher. He spoke about how difficult it is <br />for people to get back on their feet in this area. Vice Mayor Foust asked him to leave his <br />contact information. <br />6.1.H. - Page 14
