Mayor Gasparini presented the proclamation to Beth Ross, representing South County
Coalition for the Prevention of Drug Abuse, who described the parent/teacher kick off
weekend, and invited everyone to attend the week-long events, and support the community's
efforts to protect our children from the tragedies of drug use and abuse.
B. Presentation of the goals and objectives of Redwood City's boards, committees, and
commissions;
Mayor Gasparini explained that the Council set its goals and objectives at a workshop in
January, and described how important it was for the Council and the City's boards,
committees and commissions to work together; that their goals were intertwined and they
should create an effective network to achieve them. Mayor Gasparini stated that volunteers
were the most important resource any civic organization could have and Redwood City had
the most committed volunteer base she had ever seen.
1) Teen Advisory Council, Adilah Haqq-Smith, Redwood City Assistant Recreation
Center Supervisor and Sue Court, YMCA Supervisor;
REPORT: Youth Advisory Council Projective Plan
Adilah Haqq-Smith, Assistant Recreation Center Supervisor, and Sue Court, YMCA
Supervisor, advised Council that the concept of a Redwood City Teen Advisory Council
took shape in January, 1995, and described the outreach efforts utilized to find teens and
others for the Council. Ms. Haqq-Smith described the workplan and goals, the
recruitment letter, the interview application and questions:
Ms. Court described the recruitment process, advised that the Council Board will have
eleven or thirteen members and the Board will have input into the bylaws.
Council Members suggested that the December 10, 1995, application deadline might be
too soon and suggested that the Council Board have a member from the unincorporated
area.
Ms. Haqq-Smith described the Board's two-year staggered terms, and Councilwoman
La Berge agreed that it would be a good idea to have a teen member on the Council
City/School Liaison Committee.
In response to Council questions, Ms. Haqq-Smith stated most Teen Councils are
Council or commissions and generally are not known as committees; and eventually The
Teen Advisory Council would prefer to report directly to the Council.
Council Members discussed the importance of the Teen Advisory Council having a dual
reporting function, reporting to the City Council and Parks and Recreation Commission
depending on the issue; and suggested that the Mayor have input into the recruitment
letter that will bear her signature.
INUTE BOOK NO. 53 Adj.
