Vice Mayor Hartnett agreed that the Teen Advisory Council Members should not have
unrealistic expectations about their goals and objectives, but encouraged their
participation in substantive issues.
2) Parks and Recreation Commission, Susan Swope, Chairperson and Commissioners
Robert Slusser and Pauline Truscelli;
REPORT: Park and Recreation Commission Workplan
Chairperson Swope presented the Commission's workplan, supported the Teen
Advisory Council and addressed the Commission's efforts to help the Council reach the
goals and objectives the Council set for themselves and the City: youth, schools,
economic development and entrepreneurship. Chairperson Swope described their
commitment to forging as many partnerships as possible similar to their working
relationship with the Civic Cultural Commission to integrate public art into Park and
Recreation projects.
Chairperson Swope wanted everyone to know that the Commission's fundraising
activities regarding the new Red Morton Center were the Commission's decisions, not
the Council's, and they were an effort to involve the community in its own beautiful new
recreation center. Mayor Gasparini presented Chairperson Swope a check from a
resident of Redwood City for another ticket to the Red Morton fundraiser October 26,
1995, at the Police Facilities.
Councilwoman La Berge agreed with the Commission's suggestion that it would be
helpful for a member of the Commission to attend the Council's City/School Liaison
Committee.
Chairperson Swope discussed the status of several subjects: the Community
Center/School at Redwood Shores and the MOPS group, approaching Oracle to "adopt"
a school, groups in the community interested in helping the City to renovate and
maintain sports fields, allowing dogs in the City's parks, the successful resolution of
space for the City's lapidaries, and continued participation with the Historic Union
Cemetery association and departmental budget review.
Vice Mayor Hartnett thanked the Park and Recreation Commissioners for creating such
a full workplan and commended them for being one of the hardest working
commissioners in the City.
3) Senior Affairs Commission, Betty Moran and Bill Newell, Commissioners;
REPORT: Senior Affairs Commission Workplan Objectives for 1995-96 and
Tentative Calendar
MINUTE BOOK NO. 53
Adj.
