COUNCILWOMAN STEINFELD LEFT THE MEETING AND DID NOT <br /> RETURN. <br /> ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- <br /> 2) Library Director Light described her department's efforts to reach the Council's <br /> goals and objectives. Youth and Education: Project Read, shifting from "curing" <br /> adults of illiteracy to preventing children from growing up illiterate; after school <br /> homework clubs have increased; the Redwood City School District had renewed its <br /> contract for professional librarian consulting services; and the new Fair Oaks Library <br /> will open on December 14, 1995. Economic Development: In early December a <br /> group of representatives of the youth and adult sports leagues, the school districts, and <br /> the City will meet to identify issues (and possible solutions) regarding the scheduling, <br /> condition and availability of playing fields in Redwood City. <br /> Vice Mayor Hartnett advised that there was money available for playing fields from <br /> volunteers, but the fields would have to be maintained. Council Members discussed <br /> the fields and possible assistance from Mike Stalling in Daly City, and the NFL <br /> Alumni Association. <br /> 3) Police Captain Scott Vermeer presented the report, including transparencies, with <br /> assistance from Captain Dale Switzer. Customer Services is the Goal: The <br /> community policing program was reorganized with more officers on patrol and more <br /> Redwood Shores coverage; Differential response was eliminated with officers sent on <br /> all requests; and traffic enforcement was increased including removal of abandoned <br /> vehicles, which netted the City $1400; and courtesy and service was improved at the <br /> front desk and on the phones. New Activities: the Aqua Terra project cleaning the <br /> waterways; creative ways to help the homeless; aggressive enforcement of anti- <br /> prostitution laws; expansion of the Reserve Program; Spanish training for all new <br /> employees; in-house training increased; dispatch consolidation efforts; Citizen Police <br /> Academy; and youth activities. Youth Activities: a new school resource officer Police <br /> Activities League, D.A.R.E., Red Ribbon Week and partnerships with schools; new <br /> intern to assist in intervention with at risk youth; and NFL Alumni Program, helping <br /> kids.
