<br /> 4) Park and Recreation Superintendent Hartman described the department's <br /> entrepreneurial efforts: the new Red Morton Center fundraisers had been very <br /> successful; the also successful Fair Oaks Community Center flea markets; agreement <br /> with SBSA for landscape maintenance and a possible custodial agreement; field rentals <br /> to United; and the very, very successful Vets/Senior Advisory Council activities which <br /> supports a variety of programs, including the senior lunch program which is a very <br /> expensive program. Youth and Education: The Civic Cultural Commission has begun <br /> the Arts in the School program to go along with the Music in the Schools program; <br /> Sequoia High School players; and the new Citizens Arts Advisory Committee, a grass <br /> roots organization connecting with the School District; landscape maintenance for <br /> Little League; Middle School Sports Programs; the new Red Morton Center; Teen <br /> Advisory Council, and working with the Police on public safety. <br /> Council Members discussed the Child Care Coordinator's position. <br /> 5) Community Development Director Nelson discussed the Council's priorities and her <br /> department's responses. Code Enforcement: they are cracking down on repeat <br /> offenders, and looking for volunteers to assist their efforts; building regulations <br /> standardization and Code adoption are a high priority; the Traffic Advisory Committee <br /> is involved with a new pedestrian safety program and the Safe Schools Program; <br /> CDBG has funded nine different youth facilities or programs; CDBG funds provided <br /> for five different jobs and job training programs; a streamlined Child Care Permit <br /> process; Storefront Improvement Program; Planning Division has created easier <br /> systems for changes to residential structures in Redwood Shores; and Community <br /> Development is working with major developers on new developments. <br /> In response to Council questions, Director Nelson described her work with the <br /> Chamber of Commerce and targeting/recruiting certain businesses. <br /> City Manager Everett described the SAMCEDA three-year strategic plan focusing on <br /> quality of life and economic viability. <br /> Vice Mayor Hartnett described the Chamber of Commerce's plans for participation in <br /> a City focus group, and inviting downtown absentee landlords to attend. Vice Mayor <br /> Hartnett stated that if a community is a place where people want to live and work and <br /> with good educational facilities, businesses will want to locate there and will seek out <br /> that community. <br /> 6) Assistant to the City Manager Centeno described the Taft/Friendly Acres Healthy <br /> Start Program, a collaborative effort to improve a school and its neighboring <br /> community. Former Principal Caroline Currie recognized that outside factors <br /> impacted a student's ability to learn, and the Friendly Acres Neighborhood Association <br /> joined in Partnership with the School to look for solutions.
