school/community center planned for the Redwood Shores neighborhood was taking
shape, stating that it would unite the City and had been a long time goal of his. He
thanked his colleagues for allowing him to ask the difficult questions, and read an
excerpt from a letter he received: "Citizens don't realize that officeholder's such as
yourself are rare in having no personal interest other than what is best for the
community, having no personal ax to grind, having integrity and absolute honesty and
fidelity to the citizens....and (we) enjoyed your positive energy." Councilman
Sanfilipo thanked everyone and stated how much he had enjoyed his term on the
Council.
10) Councilwoman Steinfeld stated "many thanks to my colleagues for the experiences
of the last three years. They prepared me far better than anything I ever
learned...anywhere." Councilwoman Steinfeld thanked the community for allowing
her the opportunity to serve and thanked those who had the courage to change their
minds stating "I respect your dignity." Councilwoman Steinfeld said it had been a
great pleasure to serve everyone and wished to thank about 500 people, but would do
it after the meeting.
11) Vice Mayor Hartnett said he echoed his colleague's comments about Council
Members Sanfilipo and Steinfeld but wanted to say something special about
Councilman Sanfilipo: They had known each other almost all their lives, went to
grammar school together, and there was no other person he knew that was so pure of
heart in his service to the community. Vice Mayor Hartnett said to Councilman
Sanfilipo that he would be missed very much by his colleagues, but his service to the
community didn't start with the City Council and he knew it wouldn't end with
leaving the Council. He thanked Councilman Sanfilipo for his outstanding service.
Vice Mayor Hartnett said it had been a special pleasure and privilege to have been
Vice Mayor serving with the kind of Mayor the City had had this past year. He stated
he had learned a great deal from Mayor Gasparini, more than he could have hoped for.
"As a leader she has done many things that have gone unnoticed. Leadership doesn't
start and end at Council meetings, but begins when you awake and ends when you go
to sleep" and Mayor Gasparini's dedication to the best interests of Redwood City was
so clear and so deep she must have also dreamt about it. Vice Mayor Hartnett
described how well Mayor Gasparini represented the City in various business and
policy meetings, stating. "she is one tough person." He added that the effect she has
had on Redwood City will be felt for years and years to come. Vice Mayor Hartnett
stated that although the Mayor had not grown in height since her election, "she was
tall coming in and she is tall going out. Dani I salute you."
12) Mayor Gasparini stated that as Mayor of the Council team she had endured some
very interesting and challenging times. She described how she had discarded several
written farewell comments about what individuals and the media had said over the
years, and asked herself what would former Mayor Jack Greenalch say at a time like
this. Mayor Gasparini said she would follow his lead and speak from her heart
describing her experiences of the last year.
~INUTE BOOK NO. 53 Adjourned Regular Meeting Minutes
November 17,1995
Page No. 430 Page 5
