Each connection shall be sized to <br />supply the flow and pressure required to operate. (CBC and CFC 403.3.2) <br />46. Underground fire service mains and piping shall not run under buildings unless the <br />following special precautions are taken. (NFPA 24 – 2013 Edition, Section 10.6) <br /> Arching the foundation walls over the pipe <br /> Running pipe in covered trenches <br /> Providing valves to isolate sections of pipe under buildings <br />47. The building is considered a high-rise and shall comply with all applicable Building, <br />Fire and Safety codes for high-rise construction. <br />48. An automatic secondary on-site water supply having a usable capacity of not less <br />than the hydraulically calculated sprinkler demand, including the hose stream <br />requirement, shall be provided for high-rise buildings. The secondary water supply <br />shall have a duration of not less than 30 minutes as determined by the occupancy <br />classification in accordance with NFPA 13. (CBC and CFC 903.3.5.2) The <br />hydraulically calculated sprinkler demand shall be for an Ordinary Hazard Group 2 <br />Occupancy with a density of 0.20 gpm over a 1500 square foot area of operation. <br />Water storage for the fire pump shall be sized accordingly. <br />49. High-rise buildings shall have at least two (2) remotely located fire department <br />connections for each zone. (NFPA 14 – 2013 Edition, Section 7.12.2) <br />50. Fire department connections must be located within an unhindered 50-foot hose lay <br />from a fire hydrant. (Redwood City Engineering and Construction Standard W-13) <br />51. A minimum of three (3) fire hydrants shall be available at a distance of not more than <br />225 feet from the new building. (CFC Appendix C) <br />52. Firefighter’s two-way wired communication system shall be installed in buildings six <br />(6) stories in height. (Redwood City Ordinance 2402) <br />53. A public address system for the exclusive use of Fire Department personnel, peace <br />officers, or other City enforcement personnel shall be installed in buildings four (4) <br />stories in height. (Redwood City Ordinance 2402) <br />54. A two-way communication system shall be provided at the elevator landing on each <br />accessible floor that is one or more stories above or below the story of exit discharge. <br />(IBC 1007.8) <br />55. The needed fire flow shall be not less than 2500 gallons per minute at the minimum <br />residual pressure of 20 pounds per square inch for a duration of two hours. (CFC <br />APPENDIX B) This needed fire flow from a water supply includes both the required <br />fire flow and the demand for the automatic fire sprinkler system. <br />56. The entrance to the Fire Command Center shall be from the exterior of the building. <br />(Redwood City Fire Department Standard) <br />57. All new buildings shall have approved radio coverage for emergency responders <br />within the building based upon the existing coverage levels of the public safety <br />communication systems at the exterior of the building.
