Councilwoman Steinfeld, in response to the report, asked why were only three of the over
200 donations to the aforementioned Gala investigated; stated that she never accused
Councilman Sanfilipo of forgery; described her good working relationship with Great
Western and how often she is in that financial institution; stated that not one ofthe receipts
referred to in the Report was signed as "Councilwoman"; reported that she did not have
enough time to respond to the Report since it was delivered to her in the afternoon of March
17, 1994; and submitted copies of letters from Nancy Wycoff and Jim Honjas who advised
they had not been contacted regarding their comments in the subject Report and wished to
have reference to their comments removed.
MEMO 3/22/94
M/S: STEINFELD/ TO SCHEDULE A PUBLIC HEARING TO
DISCUSS THIS MATTER AT A LATER TIME.
MOTION DIED FOR LACK OF A SECOND.
MINUTE ORDER NO. 94-077
Councilwoman Gasparini stated she wanted to resolve this issue and move on to the
important concerns of the City. She stated she was disappointed in Councilwoman
Steinfeld's behavior during the investigation, and dismayed that so much time had been
spent on the issues raised by Councilwoman Steinfeld that diverted the Subcommittee from
the main focus of the investigation, and the inconsistencies in her recollections of the events
in question (although it was not taken under oath.) Councilwoman Gasparini thanked the
Subcommittee for staying focused, and advised it was time that the people involved took
responsibility for their actions, stopped denying what in fact took place, and moved
forward.
Councilwoman Steinfeld asked "disappointed about what?" Councilwoman Steinfeld
stated she did not have a perfect memory, that nobody did, not even bank officers. But, she
had never accused any colleague of forgery or fraudulent documents. Councilwoman
Steinfeld stated the subject issues had been blown out of proportion; and that
Councilwoman Gasparini wasn't half as disappointed as she was that her colleagues knew
of allegations against her in March yet did not come to her and ask her about them -- not
until September when the charges were made in public. Councilwoman Steinfeld referred
to the Report as character assassination.
In response to Councilman Greenalch's questions, Councilwoman Steinfeld stated that
there were sections of the report that were blatantly untrue, but did not specifically state
which sections she considered support the charge of character assassination.
Councilwoman Steinfeld said that the testimony ascribed to her in the interview on Page
00038 was untrue, that she did not say that Joe had become upset and had closed an account
anywhere in the past. Councilwoman Steinfeld stated she resented this statement. In
answer to Councilman Greena1ch's question, Councilwoman Steinfeld reiterated her
statement that she had never accused Paul Sanfilipo of forgery.
MINUTE BOOK NO. 52 Regular Meeting Minutes
Page No. 176 March 21, 1994
Page 5
