(1004-07) <br /> REPORT: Assistant Library Director, June 20, 1994 <br /> Assistant Library Director Duffy provided background on the damage to the interior of <br /> the Library and advised that $20,000 had been spent on refinishing furniture so far and it <br /> will cost another $15,000 to repair further damage, including 14 ofthe 25 leather chairs in <br /> the Main branch. Mrs. Duffy advised that this money could have been used to buy 1,800 <br /> books, or 1,500 videos, or 3,000 CDs. <br /> Mrs. Duffy described the four-pronged approach the Library is taking to resolve this issue: <br /> 1) Prevention which relies on education and public relations campaigns; 2) Eradication, <br /> which utilizes the efforts of City staff and volunteers, as well as those of the offender; 3) <br /> Community support in the form of volunteer monitors, parental concern, school <br /> cooperation, business donations and media coverage; and 4) Penalties, which affirm that <br /> offenders will be arrested and may be required to pay restitution costs, perform community <br /> service tasks, lose certain privleges and to suffer other penalties as designated.
