<br /> Councilwoman La Berge, candidate for Council, spoke in support of a future debate <br /> based on the possible impacts passage of these state measures would have on Redwood <br /> City citizens and residents. <br /> Councilwoman Gasparini reported on the League of California Cities meeting she <br /> attended and described the League's stand on the state propositions. Councilwoman <br /> Gasparini spoke in support of a future Council discussion of the issues that would <br /> focus on facts and be without bias. <br /> Councilman Sanfilipo, member of the Committee, advised he would not support a <br /> future Council discussion of state measures, as he believed it was inappropriate for the <br /> Council to make such recommendations to the electorate and it was a waste of staff <br /> time. <br /> Joe Steinfeld, candidate for Council, stated that Proposition 187 was the worst, racist <br /> piece of junk he had seen, and passage would turn teachers into immigration officers <br /> and create fascism in our schools. <br /> Councilwoman La Berge, candidate for Council, suggested that the League of <br /> Women Voters be asked to make a presentation to the Council and to lead the <br /> discussion of these controversial issues. <br /> MEMO 9/27/94 <br /> Dr. Henry Brodkin, Palo Alto resident, President of the medical staff of Kaiser <br /> Hospital in Redwood City, spoke in opposition to Proposition 188 which is sponsored <br /> by the Philip Morris Tobacco Company, and, if passed, would weaken anti-smoking <br /> laws established in the state. <br /> MIS: GREENALCHILA BERGE TO REQUEST A PRESENTATION BY THE LEAGUE <br /> OF WOMEN VOTERS, STATING FACTUAL CONTENT OF PROPOSITIONS 187 AND <br /> 188, AND SUMMARIES OF THOSE ARGUMENTS FOR AND AGAINST, TO BE <br /> PRESENTED TO THE CITY COUNCIL AT A DATE TO BE DETERMINED BY THE <br /> MAYOR AND STAFF. <br /> CARRIED BY THE FOLLOWING VOICE VOTE: <br /> AYES: COUNCILMEMBERS CLAIRE, GASPARINI, GREENALCH, LA <br /> BERGE AND MAYOR BUCHAN <br /> NOES: COUNCILMEMBERS SANFILIPO AND STEINFELD <br /> MINUTE ORDER NO. 94-208 <br /> Councilman Greenalch asked that a format be established for the presentation as <br /> follows: a total of one hour per proposition, with two proponents and two opponents <br /> having ten (10) minutes each, and the balance of time for Council debate. <br /> MEMO 9/27/94 <br /> Regular Meeting Minutes MINUTE BOOK NO. 52 <br /> September 26, 1994 Page No. 397 <br /> Page 8 <br /> 0- ." .0,'--'" , -- _.__0_..._--- ....-'--"'------"'..-.----.'-------.- <br />
