Mayor Claire urged voters to defeat Proposition 187, a <br /> despicable ballot measure that might subject his grandson and countless other Californians to <br /> an unfair and unamerican demand for proof of citizenship. Also, Mr. Holt asked for Council approval <br /> of the Children's Christmas parade scheduled for December 3, 1994, at 11 :00 AM. <br /> MEMO 10/25/94 <br /> B. Reverend Donna Smith Powers, 3448 Rambow, Palo Alto, spoke in opposition to <br /> Proposition 187 which would prohibit health care and education to children who could not <br /> show proof of citizenship. Dr. Powers stated passage of Proposition 187 would foster <br /> racism and curtail immunization of children. <br /> C. Joe Steinfeld, 850 Main Street, Redwood City, candidate for Council, stated he was a <br /> victim of "a Proposition 187, 60 years ago" in Mannheim, Germany. Mr. Steinfeld stated <br /> there are no illegal people, only refugees, and passage of this ballot measure would result <br /> in widespread intimidation and ethnic discrimination. Mr. Steinfeld read from <br /> Congressman Lantos' comments made over the weekend in strong opposition to <br /> Proposition 187, and gave Council letters and "No on 187" badges. <br /> D. Delores Peters, 256 McGarvey, Redwood City, Registered Nurse at Kaiser Hospital, <br /> spoke in opposition to Proposition 188 and told of the damage done by smoking and <br /> second hand smoke.
