Randy Wilcox, 205 Mendocino Way
Leslie ----' 201 Mendocino Way
In response to Council questions, Parks, Recreation and Community Services
Director Griffiths advised deferment of certain parks projects such as
Shannon and Marlin Parks was due to the drought and cost of maintenance.
Mr. Griffiths reported on the joint venture with the Belmont School
District to build a school, community center and park at Sandpiper. City
Manager Everett advised that the Council directed staff to pursue the
combined project with Belmont, as the citizens of Redwood Shores had very
decidedly stated they wanted a school, community center and park. Mr.
Everett also reminded Council of the plans by the state of California to
shortly present its bail-out demands to the cities and the expected impact
on all capital improvement projects.
Council discussed the meetings held by the Redwood Shores Owners
Association and the Redwood Shores Homeowners Association. Council
Members stated that from those meetings and the meetings of the Park and
Recreation Commission and Councilman Murray's input, it was decided that
Redwood Shores residents wished the Council to pursue a joint venture to
develop a combined school, community center and park in Redwood Shores;
and, until tonight there had not been one word of dissent nor had anyone
come forth to ask that other parks be given priority over this joint
venture proposal. Councilman Bury suggested it would be helpful if the
Council took their annual tour of the parks system now and revisit Redwood
Shores to review proposed projects. Councilman Claire suggested the
homeowners associations and the Owners Association work together to ensure
everyone's voices are heard. Councilman Greenalch suggested staff present
options so Council could consider trade-offs; acknowledged the uncertain
CIP future due to the state's actions on its deficit; and advised that the
joint venture at Sandpiper was in keeping with the Council's commitment to
the youth of Redwood City.
Diane Howard, member of the Parks and Recreation Commission, asked the
staff and audience if they would consider setting aside a day when all
interested citizens could come to the proposed park site and work to make
it presentable. Mrs. Howard advised she would have this item put on the
agenda of the next Park and Recreation Commission meeting, July 22, 1992.
MEMO 6/30/92
CONSENSUS: It was determined by Mayor La Berge that it was the consensus
of the Council: 1) to direct staff to prepare a report listing all
the options regarding parks in Redwood Shores; 2) to arrange for the
Council to tour the parks and park sites in Redwood Shores; and 3) to
help improve communication between all associations speaking for
residents in Redwood Shores, and improve their communications with the
Council.
MEMO 6/30/92
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Adjourned Regular Meeting Minutes
MINUTE BOOK NO. 51 June 29, 1992
Page Np. 122 Page 5
