166 <br />COMMUNICATION PUBLIC UTILITIES COMMISSION REGARDING SUGGESTED PLAN FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF GRADE CROSSING <br />CONDITIONS IN REDWOOD CITY. The Clerk read the letter. The Mayor asked the City Manager if he wanted <br />the City to go along with the plan and what would the City's share be in regard to this matter. City <br />Manager Rolison stated that most of the Cities have complied with the request. There are about seven <br />crossings in Redwood City which would be effected. Redwood City, under the proposed plan, would pay <br />25%, the State would pay 25% and the Southern Pacific Company would pay 50%• The City could take care so" <br />of -two crossing a year, with estimated expenditure of $14.,000. This was followed by discussion after WNW <br />which Councilman Stout moved that the City enter into the program of at least two gates a year as proposed <br />and the City Manager to set up the proper priority, seconded by Councilman Herkner. This was followed <br />by discussion. Councilman Granger wanted to know why the Clerk's office hadn't checked into the records <br />Gam] <br />as he had previously asked. He was told that they did check for two days and had not been able to <br />locate the information he had asked for. There are 25 volumes with approximately 500 pages in each <br />volume and unless they knew approximately the year in question they didn't know where to look. Coimcil-4 <br />man Granger stated that it had happened since 1940 and he offered a substitute motion to place this on <br />the agenda for one week to give the Clerk's office a chance to check further into the records. This was <br />seconded by Councilman Britschgi and carried. <br />The City Manager asked the Clerk to read his report regarding the Clinton Street Bridge. In his letter, the <br />City Manager stated that he had been advised by the City Engineer that he had discussed the preparation <br />of new plans and specifications for the construction of the Clinton Street bridge with an outside <br />engineer, and it appears that the cost of this project cannot be reduced below the City Engineer's <br />original estimate, which was based on the adoption of the Fay Street bridge design to this project. <br />The City Engineer further advised that he had received an estimate of $1,800 for all engineering - <br />services, including the spreading of assessments, in the event the Council desires to proceed at this <br />time with an assessment district. If authorized to proceed, payment for engineering services should be wow <br />made from 1944 Bond Funds, which provide for an expenditure of $3,000 for this particular project• <br />Councilman Granger asked that he be released from the Clinton Street Bridge Committee. The Mayor stated <br />that he was of the opinion that the City should make an overall study in regard to the bridges. He <br />asked Councilmen Spillers and Herkner to work on a committee in regard to the bridges in the City and <br />attempt to see what they could do in regard to a report on getting all the bridges covered. There are <br />approximately 12 to 14 bridges which need fixing and complete repair. <br />Councilman Granger moved that the Clerk be authorized to furnish the property owners in the vicinity of <br />the Clinton Street Bridge with a copy of this letter and notify them that this had been turned over to <br />another committee, seconded by Councilman Spillers and carried. <br />AUTHORIZE CLERK TO ACCEPT DEED TO LOTS B, C, D, AND E, FARM HILL NO. 2. Councilman Herkner moved that the <br />Clerk be authorized to accept the deed, -seconded by Councilman Spillers and carried. <br />The Clerk Tread an application for alcholic-beverage license for on sale beer license to Alice Martinez w.r <br />Moreno and Ynez Moreno, 310 Arguello Street, Redwood City. This was ordered filed. <br />Councilman Stout brought up the matter of the extra beams in the roof of -the bleachers. The Building <br />Inspector stated that this was needed because of the children which will be climbing on the roof. <br />=4 <br />Councilman Weiss spoke in regard to the New Letter which the City Manager sent out and in particular to the <br />item in regard to -the sales tax. He asked that the City Attorney be requested to prepare arbrief on moo <br />question and he included that they earmark a portion of the money for tax reduction. Councilman 7(eiss <br />moved that the City Attorney make a brief on the sales tax and what the City could use the money for, <br />seconded by Councilman Stout and carried. <br />Councilman Weiss, on the same report, the City Manager has stated the number of building permits issued 2nd <br />
