29
Roosevelt, Redwood and Lincoln Avenues. He stated that there were too many old bridges along Redwood Branch
Creek and that the flood condition arose from the water backing up at the bridges. City Engineer Jain stated
that the fact the bridges were wooden did not make any difference, however, the bridges in this area should
be reconstructed. This was followed by -discussion after which the Mayor stated that this should be followed
through and kept on the agend& for further consideration.
pw", Councilman Spillers submitted the names of two people for appointment to the Fairyland Committee.
fir. He submitted the following names:
Mrs. Gene Kovaleik, 1533 Alameda de las Pulgas
Mr. Ivan Johanson, 16 Yarnall Place.
The City Clerk was instructed to advise these people of their appointment and to tell them of the meeting
which will be held Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. at Johnny's Cafe.
6w Councilman Britschgi spoke in regard to the Flood situation. In his opinion the Chamber of Commerce should be
made aware that the City was very fortunate in that Redwood City had the least flooded condition of any City
in the area because of the work which had been done earlier in the year in cleaning up the creeks. He
stated further that A, B, C and D Streets were again flooded through no fault of their own. Cordilleras
Creek has too shallow a bank and the City should immediately take into consideration the raising of the
bank either with sand bags or whatever else they might need. He spoke at some length in regard to this
matter, Councilman Britschgi moved that this matter be turned over to the City Manager and City Engineer
for a report in two weeks, seconded by Councilman Granger and carried.
Councilman Britschgi spoke in regard to the flooded condition in the vicinity of Valota Road and Redwood Avenue
and the possible improvement of the bridge. City Engineer Jain stated that the improvement of this bridge
would cost approximately $15,000 to $20,000. He further stated that a great deal of the refuse and debris
p"" piling up at this bridge was coming from outside the City. Councilman Birtschgi stated that the only reason
the City wasn't flooded was because the Street Department cleaned up the creeks before the storm!. City
Engineer Jain stated that the only answer to the creek problem is to line the channels. The two existing
lined channels have proven very satisfactory.
Councilman Granger joined with the rest of the Council in extending his thanks to the Street Department for their
efforts during the flood. Doyle Chester was asked to extend the Council's thanks to the men in his depart -
hent. Councilman Granger asked the City Engineer to write a letter to all the departments and extend the
Council's thanks.
Councilman Royer agreed with Councilman Granger and extended his thanks. Councilman Granger moved that the City
Clerk be directed to write to the proper authorities in an effort to make sure that all the departments
involved in the flood control could be proper],y thanked, seconded by Councilman Stout and carried.
Councilman Stout joined with the rest of the Council in extending the thanks to the men working for the City.
City Engineer Jain was of the opinion that some word from the Council to the County to have the private property
POO
owners in the County clean up their creeks which would most certainly help the flood condition in the City.
Councilman Britsc i stated that he noticed on Sunda after the storm that
y people must have been cleaning
their property and had dumped their debris into the creek which did not help the situation at all. Something
should be done prohibiting people dumping rubbish into the creeks. Mayor Herkner suggested that the City
Manager contact the County Manager in regard to this matter.
E,
1 60
City Attorney Currie stated that a resolution should be adopted to allow stop signs on Bradford Street at
Winslow. Councilman Granger offered RESOLUTION 1958 AUTHORIZING STOP SIGNS TO BE INSTALLED ON BRADFORD
STREET AT EACH CF ITS INTERSECTIONS WITH WINSLOW STREET and moved its adoption, seconded by Councilman
Britschgi and carried on roll call.
City Attorney Currie asked the Council to authorize the City Clerk to accept deeds from Mr. Heintz whose property
is adjacent to Ross Garage and from Mr. Ross of Ross Garage.
