The Clerk read the fol- lo�ring letter from the City I�anager: The purpose of this letter is to confirm our recent canversation cancerning the date of mbr retirement fro� the position of City Manager af Redwood C�.tq� which wi.11 be on �Iay l� 1958. I alsa �rish to express rt� appreciation for the personal consideration shawn me bg your co�nmittee, and the other members of the City Cauncil� in �Iye termination of mbr 3!� years career in the aity manager professionr which becomes campulsory on the above date due to State Retirement regulations. � Needless to say� having served in the capacity of City Manager foor t,2�e City of Red�rood City on tt�rro separate occasi aris� for a total of 1� years� I �+rill greatly mi.ss my associations with the City Council and the City Officials� which I have greatly enjoyed during this long period. ` It is my on],y hope that the Cauncil will be successful in securing the most competent man available for this important position� xho� I �+rish to assure you� I will be glad to assiat in every way possible� either before or after the date of �r retirement. Counci7�nan Weymouth said the Cominittee recommended that Louis J. Kraeger and Associatea be retained to screen appli.cants and instruet them to take the follo�ing specificatians into cansideratian uith respect to prospective candidates: (1) Age — maxinnim 55 years; (2} Salary - open; (3) No publicity to be given to candidates. Instruct them to screen tlsem to the best three; position to be filled as of May 1� 1958 (no overlap)= the three candid�tes shauld be available to screen by the City Council no later than %arch 15, 1958. The Committee also recommended that Mr. R olison receiee a salary increase to t he 5th step effective 4ctober l, 195`T• � � Counci]snan Granger asked that tha recormnendations be split so they can vote on each reco�nmendation. This was folla�ved by discussian as to �rhy the City Manager shauld recsive his salary increase in October. Coun- cilman Weiss asked to leave the meeting. Cauncilman Granger moved that the City Manager's salary inarease be granted �to the 5th step effective October 1� 1957� seconded by Cauncilman Stout and carried. The follan�ing letter from C. F. Greene� Asst. District Engineer� was read: � , Mr. G lenn Jain requested certain information by telephene recently with respect to the progress of t he study � of Highv►ay Route 107 through Redwood City and its effect upon c�rtain matters pertaining to current Council aetion on future width lines for Spruce Street. � The Division of Highr►ays is no�v actively s tuc�ing the future development o� High�ray Route 107 betxeen �Pood- , side and the Bayshore Freero�ray. This stuc�y will include determi.nation of t,ype of facility� width aml ita location. Follor►ing com�pletion of aur engineering imrestigatior�s and the eol]�ection of all pertinent inform- ation� to�ether with conferences with your staff� a �seport on thia matter will be made to the State Highxay Engirnaer. If approved� our regu]a r method of public presentation� xhieh involves informational meetings� displays and hearings� xill be follawed prior to a recommendation by the State Highbr�y Engineer• I Coanpletion of our studies and aPorementioned public presentations will require� unfortunate],y� several months , with the probabliity that t he Highw�y �gineerts recommendation would not be made before early r�xt Spring. � Y�e appreciate the efforts which the City hav� m��de to establish width lines and thereby protect for highway �,,,� and street purposes lands which migh�otherwise be deneloped with expensive improvements and we understand your concern xith respect to further es�ablishment of this procedure a long Spruce Street. Unfortunately� until we have completed aur studies and have e throught aforemen�tioned procedures� xe carm ot give you advice as to xhether Sprucs Street or some other s �reet might be' the best location for this roafivay. Actually� the choice betrreen streets is related not anly t o the conditi.ons, along the streets themselves but to the very complex engineering problem of providing for the traffic movements at the crossing of E1 ' Camiho Real together with the crossing of the main line of the Southern Pacific tracks� and until rather detailed engineering studies have been completed rore could not ourselves recommend a location for thia street. �Pe regret that we have been unable to undertake this study earlier but we believe you are aware of at least ', one pro�eet� Junipero Ssrra FreeRay� in your irrs�►ediate area vrhich has had a telling effect upon the time ' that aur staff might have a�railabls to undertake the study. , Councilman Stout spoke at some length on the advantage of I�anzanita Street over Spruce Street to connect ' Bayshore HigYnray with El Camino Real. xe also spoke of the possibility of rerouting the Southern Pacific li Railroad tracts from Chestnut Street to Spruce Street or Manzanita Street.
