Mayor Weymouth advised that several oral communi- <br /> cation requests have been received from residents <br /> of Redwood Shores regarding the recent f3.re there . <br /> Mayor Weymouth asked Fire Chief Keller to give a <br /> � preliminary report on the fire, noting that a full <br /> investigation is under way. <br /> � <br /> Fire Chief Keller described the City' s arrange- <br /> ment with the Belmont Fire Protection District <br /> with regard to fire protection for Redwood Shores <br /> and commented on the favorable experience the City <br /> has had with the District. <br /> Chief Keller described the events surrounding the <br /> July 19 house fire started by two juveniles which <br /> took place at about 6 :00 p.m. He stated that <br /> Belmont responded within three minutes of the time <br /> of the first call with one engine and two men who <br /> saw heavy black smoke and commenced preliminary � <br /> steps toward suppressing the fire. Redwood City <br /> men and equipment arrived within seven minutes. <br /> Chief Keller was also present as was the Battalion <br /> Chief from Belmont. <br /> Chief Keller also described the difficulties en- <br /> countered by Belmont with the coupling on a new <br /> hose and commented on the large crowd which was <br /> relatively orderly, but noted that the size of <br /> �'"^ the crowd and their closeness to the equipment <br /> and the profanities they directed against the <br /> �,,, firefighters were not helpful in the situation. <br /> He observed that fire experts indicated the fire <br /> had started at least ten minutes before any alarm <br /> was given. <br /> Given the circumstances, Chief Keller stated his <br /> belief that the Belmont Fire Protection District <br /> did a good job. <br /> Clay Shank, 540 Compass Drive, stated he was at <br /> the scene when the first fire engine arrived. He <br /> urged that Fire Station No. 5 be established in <br /> Redwood Shores and be given a higher priority <br /> than that planned at present. <br /> Bill Littell, 475 Starboard Drive, stated that he <br /> is a contractural engineer working with fire pro- <br /> tection for highrise buildings.
