In subsequent <br /> months , their efforts were directed to elements of the project , such <br /> as stations , alignment , terminals and a yard , or support facilities . <br /> They then identified a number of sites , lines , several possible term- <br /> inals and three alternatives for yards . These were accepted as a basis <br /> for further study . <br /> The next step was to find the criteria , and single out what factors <br /> were involved . Once these are sorted out , incorporation input by <br /> various cities , they hoped within another month or two to achieve the <br /> goal to define the group of stations so that if and when BART came into <br /> San Mateo County there would be a general , acceptable plan , and it would <br /> be possible to set a reasonably accurate cost . He then referred to an <br /> exhibit representing a series of aerial photographs taken in 1972 , de - <br /> scribing it as a strip generally paralleling the westerly side of Southern <br /> Pacific Railroad . He pointed out the proposed major station locations . <br /> He felt that Redwood City station would probably function very well as <br /> the end of the line , With respect to a location for a yard , Redwood City <br /> was not considered or recommended in the study . Alternative locations <br /> considered were San Mateo , Burlingame , and a site on the airport property . <br /> He responded to questions by Council , covering the matter of sufficient <br /> parking , and he indicated further analysis was necessary . <br /> Mayor Keckley asked whether it was anticipated the system would go as <br /> far as Menlo Park , and Mr . Lathrop advised that the plan was predicated <br /> on the assumption that some day BART would go entirely around the Bay . <br /> Councilman Weymouth inquired , on the basis of the proposed right of way <br /> West of the SP tracks , noting that in some places the tracks would be <br /> close together , whether this would mean loss of some businesses East of <br /> the tracks . Mr . Lathrop responded that the mean distance between SP and <br /> the transit tracks was 50 to 6o feet , and it was true there would be a <br /> serious impact on businesses in that strip . He indicated that viable <br /> businesses could , under current State and Federal laws , be assisted to <br /> relocate within the City , but for marginal businesses this might not be <br /> feasible . What is to be worked out in the next few months is the align- <br /> ment so as to determine what businesses would be affected . <br /> Mr . Lathrop noted that if the project should be approved tomorrow , it <br /> would probably not be operational before 1985 .
