6-- ? ()
pjOQ1
Further reference was made to memorandum enumerating the various civic
promotions requiring City manpower assistance , along with those costs ,
in addition to direct financial participation , which totaled $39 , 710 for
1972 . The organizations and activities in which City participated
financially in 1972 were : Chamber of Commerce - 518 , 000 ; Downtown
Christmas decorations - $4 , 000 ; Fourth of July celebration - S2 , 000 ;
Jaycees Boat Regatta -- 6500 ; Juventus Junior. Soccer Team - $ 500 ; Redwood
City Striders - S250 ; Downtown Association - $1 , 300 , and San Mateo County
Convention Bureau - $ 3 , 330 .
Councilman Norris noted that appropriation to the Chamber of Commerce had
been increased last year , and asked whether City was given an accounting
from them as to how the money was being spent . City Manager indicated
that the funds are dispensed on a quarterly basis in accordance with the
level of activity , and furnish an accounting at the end of each quarter .
Account No . 590 - Community Center : Assistant City Manager noted that it
had been expected to be ready by October , but there is some question
about that .
Account No . 420 - City Clerk : City Manager noted that the increase was for
the purpose of conducting election next Spring .
Account No . 421 - City Treasurer- Collector : Approved as submitted .
Account No . 430 - City Controller : City Controller elaborated on plans to
update the departmentts filing system . Councilman Henderson expressed
concern regarding requests for more money for more computers , and felt
that while she agreed the programs were necessary , i. t would be desirable
to see some kind of clear description of benefits . City Manager
responded that he would be glad to provide details on benefits . Council-
man Norris commented on a common tendency with respect to computers , that
whenever a new device came out , it was necessary to have the latest model ,
and felt that it was important to be sure the desired capability was not
already there , with existing equipment . City Manager advised that the
major reason was simply capacity in terms of present hardware , which
presents a problem in terms of programs that have been lined up . He
indicated that consideration was being given to consortium in the County ,
and that there had been discussions with Daly City regarding Redwood City
doing their payrolls , etc . Also , Public Works Department would like to
computerize data for reports to the State , and the equipment would
provide the capability of doing this automatically . These all represent
a capacity problem , and is not a question of more sophistication in the
capability .
5/12/73
Adj . Reg . Mtg .
