490
from Mr . Peterson to substantiate that claim . With regard to the property
at 2424 Jefferson Avenue , his department had acted more hastily than with
the 48 Laurel Street property , principally because the former was not safe
and was occupied . Furthermore , there had been no response from Mr . Longo
to the initial inspection reports to him . —T
Chief Building Official noted that it had been necessary to resort to hand
delivery of notice by the Police Department because of lack of cooperation .
City Attorney asked the Chief Building Official whether he had ever received
an address or any correspondence from Mr . Peterson . Chief Building Official
responded negatively , and that he had only heard the name . In response to
additional questioning by City Attorney , Chief Building Official indicated
that with respect to public safety involved , he believed time was of the
essence , particularly with respect to the dwelling at 2424 Jefferson , because
it was occupied . With respect to 48 Laurel , he believed this was true be -
cause of the length of time the matter had gone on , since it could invite
vandalism .
Vice -Mayor Henderson asked if Mr . Longo could identify his counsel , Mr .
Peterson by full name and address . Mr . Longo stated that the name was Jack
Peterson , from San Francisco . In response to question by City Attorney as
to when Mr . Peterson was contacted with regard to appearing at this meeting ,
Mr . Longo stated he was not clear on dates , but thought it was about a week
ago . City Attorney further suggested that an associate in Mr . Peterson ' s
office might be reached , pointing out that once the process under discussion
is in motion , time becomes very important and not to be taken lightly . Mr .
Longo indicated it was impossible to contact anyone else tonight .
In response to request from Vice -Mayor Henderson for an expression from
Council as to whether the public hearing should proceed or be continued to
another date , Councilman Weymouth felt that the matter had been given ample
time and that Council should proceed with the public hearing . Vice -Mayor
Henderson concurred , and asked that the Chief Building Official proceed with
his testimony .
Chief Building Official advised that his complete report on actions to date
had been filed with the City Clerk , then proceeded to review his report to
the City Manager .
Report described the dwelling unit , 2424 Jefferson Avenue , as a one story
wood frame dwelling and detached garage and accessory building originally
constructed in 1925 , with appraised value of $ 11 , 500 for land , and $ 5 , 280
for improvements . Dwelling unit contained 762 square feet , garage 324
square feet , zoned single - family residential in Fire Zone 3 . Owner was
8/13/73
Reg . Mtg .
