295 <br /> COMMUNITY PROGRESS REPORT . City Manager reviewed his written report of <br /> February 9 , 1973 to Council , beginning with Community Development : <br /> Building construction valuation in calendar year 1972 amounting to <br /> $ 10 , 546 , 326 , reflected a 56% decrease from 1971 valuation of $23 , 831 , 179 , <br /> 250 new dwelling units were added in 1972 , compared to 841 in 1971 . <br /> During 1972 , 32 dwelling units were demolished , Waterfront Committee has <br /> crystalized its role in development of the Waterfront Element of the <br /> General Plan , The Committee will interview and recommend for selection <br /> �. the various consultants necessary to complete the study . This will be <br /> discussed at a meeting later this week and preliminary decision made . <br /> Parks and Recreation . Reorganization of the Department is continuing <br /> under direction of Director of Parks and Recreation , As part of this , <br /> Park Superintendent ' s office is now located in the Community Activities <br /> Building , To date , in 1972 -73 , 109 street trees had been removed for <br /> various reasons , and 283 trees planted , During the Christmas vacation <br /> period , Parks and Recreation programmed the gym at Sequoia High School <br /> for drop - in basketball , and participation totaled 1231 . Adult basket- <br /> ball had a record 41 teams , involving some 400 participants . Public Works . <br /> San Francisco Hetch Hetchy project was essentially complete with minimum <br /> cleanup remaining . City ' s traffic engineering consultant , Robert Doble , <br /> was completing study of El Camino Real signalization project . A meeting <br /> was held with various El Camino property owners regarding the study , which <br /> clarified a number of questions , Preliminary plans for Broadway-Marshall - <br /> Arguello intersection and grade crossing relocation had been submitted to <br /> Southern Pacific and Public Utilities Commission for review . Design of <br /> Part 1 <br /> TOPICS project , Phase II/Veterans Blvd . - Whipple Avenue intersection was <br /> 80% complete . Project scheduled for completion in November 1973 . Part <br /> 2 , Brewster-Winslow Street signals and widening 70% complete in design <br /> and also scheduled for completion in November 1973 , In accordance with <br /> Resolution No , 6663 adopted January 17 , 1972 , declaring Chestnut Street , <br /> Lathrop to El Camino , a one -way street , City was constructing an island to <br /> restrict eastbound traffic on Chestnut from El Camino . Division of Highways <br /> was constructing a median on El Camino barring left turns onto Chestnut . <br /> Public Safety . Fire Department pumper unit put out of service in May 1972 <br /> during a pillow factory fire was now returned to service . Two new 1500 GPM <br /> diesel pumpers would be ready for service in two weeks , one to be assigned <br /> to Station #2 and the other to be assigned to Station #3 . Fire losses to <br /> date in 1972 -73 totalled $ 95 , 327 , compared with $ 555 , 000 last year for the <br /> same period , Value of property stolen through December totaled $ 959, 000 vs . <br /> $226 , 700 recovered . This compared to $ 902 , 000 vs , $376 , 700 for last year . <br /> 2/12/73 <br />
