Public Safety : A program has been designed to reduce home burglaries and to assist the police in recovery of stolen property . The Police Department has 24 electric engraving tools available for use by the public on a three day loan basis to place identifying numbers ( driver ' s license ) on all valuable , portable articles that are most oten sought by burglars . After marking the articles and returning the engraving tool , the homeowner will receive decals to be displayed prominently in their home . One of these engraving tools was brought to the meeting by Chief of Police for examination by Council . Councilman Norris asked why the driver ' s license number was used , rather than , for example , liThe Social Security number , Thief McDonald stated that , with the present system in California law enforcement , when stolen goods are recovered , the address can be obtained within thirty seconds after the driver ' s license number is given . Social Security is a very complicated system which requires Bending a letter to Washington for any information . In Public Safety activities , a 40--hour police management course , conducted by the FBI and sponsored by the Redwood City Police Department , was held in Redwood City , June 26 through June 30 . The course was attended by 12 members of the Redwood City Police Department and nine members from other San Mateo County law enforcement agencies .
