r -'
194
pointed out that one of the staff recommendations was to hold infor-
mational meetings for those involved . City Manager advised that not
only property owners would receive notification of the meetings , but
also those who operate businesses that would be affected . Mayor
Keckley indicated he would not favor cutting back the scope of the
project , and that a fully improved El Camino would be a tremendous
asset to Redwood City . He recalled that there had been pressures
from merchants objecting to the scope of the Woodside Road improve -
ments and that they were not happy with the situation ,
Al Oneto , owner of property on El Camino
Real , stated that he thought it should be
left alone , and that if by beautification
all curb parking is eliminated , it would
hurt business .
Edward Dick , owner of Old Mill Flower Shop ,
inquired as to what action was to be taken
at this time .
Mayor Keckley explained that staff was requesting an expression from
Council as to what the studies should encompass .
Mr . Dick stated that when he purchased
the business he talked with businessmen
along El Camino and circulated a petition
which was signed by those who did not
approve of changes to El Camino for various
reasons , mainly the no parking provision . He
said that if Council could come up with off-
street parking for their customers , this would be
the answer to the whole thing .
John Dini , B & D Sport Shop , suggested
limiting left turns .
Planning Director advised that when the project was first envisioned ,
it was contemplated it would go from the San Carlos city limits line
South as far as Redwood City occurs on both sides of El Camino Real ,
which is about at Gemco . Beyond that point , portions are in unin-
corporated area . Since then , cost estimates were prepared , and the
project focused on the portion from Whipple to the "Five -points "
interchange . San Carlos had not prepared their plans , and it was
felt that the section from Whipple to San Carlos city limits should
be worked out with them so that the highway is not too different in
character . He noted that Whipple Avenue is one entrance to Redwood
City and suggested that therefore was a logical starting point at
that end , and "Five -points " , or Woodside Expressway , was another
entrance . He said there was continuous traffic between those two
streets , both of which had connections with Bayshore Freeway .
10/9/72
Reg . Mtg .
