<br /> COMMUNITY PROGRESS REPORT . City Manager noted that a detailed report had gone
<br /> forward to Council , which in this instance summarized activities of the
<br /> various department for the 1971 calendar year .
<br /> Community Development - City realized $2.3 , 831 , 000 in new construction
<br /> during 1971 , $ 14 , 797 , 500 in residential building, $3 , 229, 500 in commercial -
<br /> industrial structures , and 55 , 804 , 000 in alterations and additions . 1971
<br /> values generated 5101 , 100 in permit fees , compared with 1970 values of
<br /> S6 , 111 , 000 and t40 , 550 in permit fees . Twenty - three substandard residential
<br /> units and eight commercial structures were demolished during 1971 .
<br /> Redwood Shores - The following projects were completed in Redwood Shores :
<br /> 1 ) Marlin 1 and 2 subdivisions , consisting of storm drains , sanitary
<br /> sewers , water mains , curbs and gutters , paving and sidewalks ; cost of the
<br /> project : S2 , 317 , 200 ; 2 ) Bridge and Peninsula Parkway landscaping ; costing
<br /> $ 160 , 000 ; 3 ) Bridge Connections ; cost $ 181 , 350 ; 4) Bridge Parkway Bridge ;
<br /> cost 51 , 088 , 460 ; 5 ) Raising and dressing perimeter levees ; cost $22 , 800 ;
<br /> 6) Redwood Peninsula Lighting-Phase I ; cost S110 , 000 .
<br /> Parks and Recreation - Recreation activities continued at high level throughout
<br /> the year . After school programs at the 15 elementary and 3 Junior High
<br /> Schools consisted of sports and crafts . Since bringing Veterans Memorial
<br /> Building under jurisdiction of Recreation Department , use of the facility
<br /> has substantially increased , averaging monthly usage of 160 groups and
<br /> organizations . With emphasis on landscaped divider strips and greenery ,
<br /> workload in Parks Department steadily increases . During 1971 , 2068 trees
<br /> were trimmed , 136 removed , 690 planted , and 1650 treated in various ways .
<br /> Public Safety - New and different approaches to law enforcement resulted
<br /> in significant reductions in crime . A table of statistics was provided
<br /> showing the difference between 1970 and 1971 in numbers of crimes in
<br /> seven categories for a reduction overall of 7 . 9%, and significant increase
<br /> in arrests .
<br /> Fire Department responded to 1 , 602 calls during 1971 , including 200 false
<br /> alarms , compared to 1 , 649 for 1970 . Fire damage totaled $ 1 , 226 , 865
