408
Association , and California State flags , if they are to be used , would have
to be purchased , since the City owns none . Reaction from Club Mexicano -
Americano was that the timing of Admission Day event would have an adverse
effect on their Fiesta , being separated by only three days .
Mr . Bob Wallace , representing the Native Sons
of the Golden West , spoke in support of their
request , and indicated many benefits are
derived by the host City . He stated he would
have to report back to their Grand Officer
who would determine whether they were interested
in having the celebration in Redwood City . In
response to question , he acknowledged Redwood
City would probably have a problem with housing .
Mayor Bury noted that Council was represented by Councilman Henderson on
the County ' s Convention and Visitors Bureau , Councilman Henderson indicated
the Bureau could be of great assistance in the area of publicity for both
events , and felt it would be desirable to have the Native Sons ' celebration
in Redwood City , notwithstanding continuing support of the Mexican-American
Fiesta . She felt these were two celebrations all could enthusiastically
support , and that they could be compatible , rather than competitive . She
suggested that if Council approved the request , the City and PCA examine
together the possibility of acquiring State flags or banners , and require
of NSGW that any that are lost or damaged be replaced .
Mr . Wallace responded to further questions by
Council , indicating they were agreeable to a
Sunday parade as recommended by the Police
Department , and that it would start at noon so
as not to interfere with church services . He
also indicated there would be no manpower problem ,
and that they would mist the Mexican-American
Fiesta as in the past .
Mr . Paul Sedillo , 728 Whipple Ave . , President
of Club Mexicano-Americano , felt that the Native
Sons ' event would be wonderful for the City , but
expressed concern with regard to the back- to -back
nature of the two celebrations , and that having a
large parade would hurt theirs the following week
end .
Mayor Bury noted that the dates for the two celebrations were historically
established . Councilman Petersen felt that the request should be approved ,
particularly since this was the first time Redwood City was being considered
as host city and it was a one - time event . In continuing discussion , City
Manager suggested that because of the concern of the sponsors of Club Mexicano-
Americano , Council might want to encourage the two groups to get together
to work out concerns , and offered the City offices to accomplish this .
Mr . Wallace gave assurance of their cooperation with
regard to continuing to assist with the Fiesta parade .
Mrs . Edwards , 857 Cornwall Court , Sunnyvale , expressed
concern in behalf of the Mexican community .
Mr . Frank Falk , 217 Encina Avenue , Manager , PCA ,
indicated there was no competitiveness with regard
to the two celebrations , and briefly described the
types of activities expected to be conducted during _ .
the Admission Day event .
Dr . Ernest E. Schnoor , 566 Santa Clara Avenue ,
expressed hope solutions could be found , since
the two groups represented two great traditions .
2 -7-.72
