D. Councilwoman Gasparini reported on the recent meeting of the Childcare Coordinating Council and described the upcoming fundraiser, the proceeds going to the La Berge Child Care Fund; the plans for supervised playground care; and a new child care center near McGarvey. E. Mayor Buchan reported on her upcoming trip to China to finalize the Sister City relationship between Redwood City and Zhuhai, China. Mayor Buchan asked her colleagues to decide on the Council meeting schedule for October. Mayor Buchan thanked the Park, Recreation and Community Services Department and the Redwood City Civic Cultural Commission for their wonderful concerts in the parks series. Mayor Buchan thanked Vice Mayor Claire for his presentation to the Institute of the Future on state and local government financing. F. Councilwoman La Berge described how the La Berge Child Care Fund began, the benefits to Redwood City children derived from last year's donations, and this year's event which will be held on October 3, 1993, at the Sequoia YMCA, an ice cream social with country and western dancing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mayor Buchan declared a recess at 8:47 P.M. Temporary Establishment of the Redwood City Art Center in the Old Police Facility. (101-12) REPORT: Assistant Library Director, August 30, 1993 Barbara Britschgi, introduced Ruth Waters, Redwood City artist and sculptor, operator of the 1810 Art Center and Gallery in Belmont, who described how the building would be used by artists, painters and sculptors and agreed that the site was only temporary and the permit could be revoked at the discretion of the City. In response to Council questions Ms. Waters described the proposed signage, the role of the artists' association and the facilities manager, and the evolution of the Art Center Task Force into an oversight committee. In response to Council questions, City Attorney Schricker advised the Art Center would be responsible for normal maintenance and regular repairs, but the City would be responsible for any structural improvements. Don Saye, Main Street merchant and Redwood City resident, spoke in favor of using the old police department as a temporary site for an Art Center in Redwood City.
