<br /> Lockheed Facility - Marine Oriented Hardware : Lockheed has
<br /> been authorized to commence construction of their proprietary
<br /> manufacturing facility on Leslie Salt Co . property adjacent
<br /> to the salt pile and Redwood Creek . Staff has been assured
<br /> manufacturing will not produce or adversely affect City ' s
<br /> concerns related to noise , water quality , air pollution or
<br /> contain hazardous materials or operation . Use has been
<br /> authorized by Zoning and approved by Architectural Committee .
<br /> Complex contains a $286, 000 building and $243 , 000 crane base
<br /> and bulkhead . Facility will employ approximately Go persons ,
<br /> Rolison Road Extension : Plans and specifications 65% complete .
<br /> Preliminary package will be submitted to Ampex for review on
<br /> or about August 15 , 1971 , as provided for in agreement .
<br /> City Library : Smokey Bear Reading Club program very successful .
<br /> Special story hours held on front lawn of Library and City Hall
<br /> during July and August . More than 1 , 000 children are members
<br /> of Club . In joint effort with six other libraries , staffs are
<br /> engated in two federal grant programs , one to survey holdings
<br /> of each library to provide each agency with knowledge of their
<br /> combined strengths and weaknesses . The other project , entitled
<br /> "book power " , is a mobile unit containing collection of paperback
<br /> books selected for having special interest to minority groups .
<br /> Locally , mobile unit stops at Fleischman Park , at Douglas Avenue
<br /> near the Probe Offices , and at Second Avenue .
<br /> Fire Department : Currently working with Port of Redwood City
<br /> and Pacific Fire Rating Bureau to develop improvements to
<br /> existing water system for fire suppression . Department has
<br /> been training new firemen using old , dilapidated residential
<br /> structures prior to demolition , as supported by property owners .
<br /> Fire Chief also coordinating studies with DMJM toward development
<br /> of fire fighting facility at Redwood Shores ,
<br /> Police Department : Within next two weeks , will have completed
<br /> its recruitment program and be fully staffed . 123 applicants
<br /> for 5 police officer positions .
<br /> Park Department : Currently completing renovation of 49er football
<br /> field , and planting street trees in front of completed homes in
<br /> Redwood Shores . Union Soldier has been donated to San Mateo
<br /> Historical Association due to continued acts of vandalism at
<br /> Union Cemetery .
<br /> Recreation Department : 175 ' of rope float installed at Marlin
<br /> Beach , Redwood Shores , to protect children from entering deep
<br /> water . Park & Recreation Commission Golf Committee studying
<br /> possible site locations for municipal golf course , including
<br /> Filoli -Roth watershed site , Rosecrans-Coleman site in Woodside ,
<br /> and scavenger site at Redwood Shores . Studies in preliminary
<br /> stages and Council will be advised of further progress .
<br /> Planning Department : As a result of Zoning Ordinance changes
<br /> pertaining to setback regulations , open space requirements
<br /> and architectural controls , Department experiencing more active
<br /> public response to Architectural Committee hearings , and received
<br /> more concentrated design submissions pertaining to use permits ,
<br /> variances , architectural controls and planned development permits .
<br /> Three federally- supported developments processed by Department
<br /> have been submitted to Building Department : two housing unit
<br /> apartments for elderly , supported by San Mateo County Housing
<br /> Authority , to be located on Linden Street and Lincoln Avenue ,
<br /> and Casa. de Redwood Development to be located on Veterans Blvd ,
<br /> south of Kaiser Hospital . Total number of apartment units is 212 . -
<br /> S . C . S . P . - Good News : As of July 26 , 1971 , City ceased to
<br /> discharge sewage into Redwood Creek , is now completely connected
<br /> to SCSP outfall line discharging in deep water channel of bay .
<br /> As of July 28 , 1971 , effluent from Belmont and San Carlos through
<br /> San Carlos plant also connected to new outfall line . At present
<br /> time , system is completely operational and functioning without
<br /> problems .
<br /> Redwood Shores Street Lighting : As reported on July 23 , 1971 ,
<br /> Staff authorized DMJM to proceed with preparation of plans ,
<br /> specifications , etc . , for submission to Council for call for
<br /> bids . Tentative schedule is for submission to Council on
<br /> August 23 , with intention of having system completed and in
<br /> operation on or about February 21 , 1972 .
