40
Councilman Henderson inquired if an attempt could be made to circulate the
information on fee schedules to the normal users of the buildings prior to
the time it is on the Agenda for Council action , She suggested postponing
action for a week to allow time for dissemination of the information .
Councilman Rhodes agreed but felt that it should be postponed for a longer
period of time .
In response to question by Council , City Manager estimated 20 or more groups
would have to be notified , and it would take time to get their addresses ,
especially those who use the buildings on a no-fee basis . He indicated a
mailing would be sent out , and information posted in both buildings . After
discussion , Council decided this matter should be postponed until March 22nd ,
in order to allow time for people to be notified .
Mayor Bury commented that perhaps more ways could be found to use the
Veterans Memorial Building which would complement the expressions of
respect for those men who have served their country , and suggested special
activities or programs on such days as Memorial Day, Veterans Day , or the
Fourth of July . He felt there were many ways to use the building to make
it a viable , living memorial as opposed to just having the name on the
building .
Mrs . Emily Tessendorff , 45 Claremont Avenue , Redwood
City , a Gold Star Mother , inquired if the rent was
going to be raised on the Gold Star Mothers ' room .
She also inquired about the use of the kitchen .
Mrs . Thompson advised that the recommendation is that
Veterans groups that are presently using the building
would continue to use it on a no-fee basis , subject
to the size of the group or the activity . Small groups
would be asked to use the Conference Room , which has
a capacity of 20 , rather than the larger room which
has a capacity of 120 . There would be no fee for the
use of the kitchen .
Mrs . Madeline Wallace , 154 Cerrito Avenue , Redwood
City , Past President representing the Native Daughters
of the Golden West , requested that they be considered
under a special classification , as the increase in
rent would work a hardship on their organization .
She stated that they have 1? 5 members and have been
renting the building for 13 years . She requested a
copy of the proposed fee schedule and report of Park
and Recreation Commission ,
City Manager indicated Staff will comply with this request .
Councilman Williams agreed with the request of the Native Daughters of the
Golden West and felt that further consideration should be given to their
status .
