1
Mrs . Thompson responded that provision had been made
for the determination of priorities by the Recreation
Department , and the request would be considered .
Councilman Rhodes moved that the appropriate resolution be presented for
Council consideration on March 22 , seconded by Councilman Henderson , and
carried . (MINUTE ORDER #71 -32 )
Paul Tessendorff , 45 Claremont Avenue , Redwood City ,
advised that he wished to present an item relating to
the Veterans Memorial Building for the Council Agenda
of March 22 . In response to a suggestion by Mayor
Bury , Mr . Tessendorff stated he would address a letter
to the Mayor regarding the item he wished the Council
to consider .
Councilman Henderson moved to adopt RESOLUTION NO , 6459 RECOMMENDING PASSAGE OF
AN INCREASE IN THE GENERAL PURPOSE TAX LIMIT FOR THE SAN MATEO JUNIOR COLLEGE
DISTRICT , seconded by Councilman Rhodes ,
Councilman Henderson stated that this matter had been discussed at the City-
School Liaison Committee , of which she and Councilman Rhodes are members , and
it was urged at that meeting that the various agencies take positive action
in support of the tax for the Junior College District . She felt this was
very much a matter of concern for the City Council , as the junior colleges
are a public service facility important to Redwood City . She felt that failure
to pass the tax would create much more serious and costly problems for the City .
Mayor Bury expressed his support of the proposal , pointing out the needs that
the community colleges fulfill in giving an opportunity for many young people
to get the education and capability to compete with others for job opportunities
and life style in these complex times .
Sidney Herkner , 55 Turnsworth Avenue , Redwood City ,
came forward to urge the Council to support the
resolution , stating that the Council and the City of
Redwood City have a great stake in Canada College ,
and it would be a catastrophe if the tax override
did not pass .
Motion carried on roll call vote , Councilmen Keckley and Petersen being noted
absent .
Greg Patrick , 1414 James Avenue , Redwood City ,
inquired of Council what becomes of the Resolution
after it is passed .
Mayor Bury responded that the Resolution would be sent to the Committee for
the Tax Issue , and to the newspaper , with the hope that some appropriate action
would occur , They will be able to report that the City Council supports the
measure .
