Redwood Shores Regatta , April 10 , 1971 . City Manager referred to his reports <br /> of March 5th and March 12th to Council , advising of several meetings of <br /> staff with the Redwood Shores Regatta Committee concerning use of interior <br /> waterways for a rowing regatta , and request of Mr . Kent Mitchell , Chairman <br /> of the Regatta Committee , to appear before Council in that regard . <br /> Mr . Mitchell expressed appreciation for the <br /> opportunity to make the request . He felt this <br /> particular course exceptionally well- suited to <br /> 2 -lane rowing , and indicated several features <br /> not present in any other course in the country , <br /> such as protection from the wind , restriction <br /> as to type of craft using the waterway , and <br /> location in a community receptive to this type <br /> activity . He also felt this particular course <br /> likely to become the principal site for rowing <br /> in the Bay Area . <br /> Mr . George Hayes , Chairman of the Redwood Shores <br /> Homeowners , Association, Inc . , spoke in support <br /> of the request , and added that there would be a <br /> display of manufactured boats in that area on <br /> Sunday at about noon . <br /> City Manager indicated that staff enthusiastically supported the activity , <br /> and noted that Mr . Mitchell was highly qualified to serve as Chairman , <br /> having been a member of the 1960 Olympic rowing team at Rome , member of <br /> the 1964 Olympic rowing team at Tokyo , and Coach of the U . S . rowing team <br /> for the 1966 World Championships in Yugoslavia . <br /> Councilman Keckley moved to approve use of Redwood Shores interior waterways <br /> for a collegiate rowing regatta , as requested , seconded by Councilman <br /> Henderson and carried . (MINUTE ORDER #71 -45 ) <br /> Continued PUBLIC HEARING , Appeal of HUMBLE OIL & REFINING CO . from denial by <br /> Planning Commission of Application for a Use Permit to construct an <br /> automobile service station , 2079 Woodside Road , in a " CN " (Neighborhood <br /> Commercial ) District , declared open . The public hearing had been continued <br /> from Council meeting of February 22nd in order that full Council could be <br /> present . Affidavits of publication and mailing had previously been ordered <br /> filed . <br /> Councilman Williams stated for the record that he would abstain from taking <br /> part in the discussions and voting on the matter . <br /> Mr . William Brodie , representing Petroleum <br /> Properties , Werner Salinger and Humble Oil Co , , <br /> spoke in support of granting of the Use Permit , <br /> and referred to several points in the Staff <br /> Report in which he disagreed , In addition , he <br /> submitted a letter from Jack H. Estes , Assessor <br /> for the County of San Mateo , relative to land <br /> values for service stations in Woodside Road <br /> area , as well as a letter from Edmund G , Cruze , <br /> 2179 Alameda , indicating he had no objection to <br /> a gas station at this corner . <br />
