226
been directed by Council to prepare resolution revoking original
permit for the service sign at Main Street and Woodside on-ramp,
as recommended by Ordinance Review Committee to comply with Sign
Ordinance regarding non -conforming signs. Permittee had been
notified by Chief Building Official of proposed action. Motion
carried on roll call vote, Councilmen Keckley and Petersen being
noted absent.
0 Councilman Weymouth moved to introduce Ordinance amending Section 3.122
of the Code relating to maximum area of signs in non -residentially
zoned districts, seconded bir Councilman Arnett. In response to
Council question as to height limitations, City Attorney advised
the existing restrictions would remain in effect as to height.
Councilman Henderson expressed concern as to the resulting appearance.
At this point, Chief Building Official noted a typographical error
as to square footage which would be corrected prior to submittal
for adoption. He added that the ordinance would allow very large
signs on very large parcels of land, with minimum size of parcel to
be five acres. There is a limited number of parcels where this
ordinance could be applicable. He noted other restrictions such as
minimum frontage and requirement to be at least 650 feet from a
public street or freeway to match the State Advertising Act regarding
billboards. Furthermore, such signs would be subject to Architectural
permit of the Planning Department. In response to Council expressions
of concern, he felt that in satisfying the several conditions that
must be met, there would be few requests. Councilman Henderson
indicated she could not support the ordinance, and Councilman Arnett
withdrew his second to the motion. Councilman Weymouth suggested
that rather than take a vote, it might be preferable to have the
benefit of opinion of the other members of the Council Committee
absent from meeting and moved to continue the matter for one week
(June 8, 1970), seconded by Councilman Arnett, Councilman Henderson
requested that Staff prepare a drawing in perspective be submitted at
that time.
