(MINUTE ORDER #70-132)
Discussion of Veterans Memorial Commission membership.
Mayor Bury reported his discussion with Don Peacock, Chairman, that day,
and previously with Floyd Granger, who had submitted a verbal resignation,
but not a formal one, and Mr. DePatta who had also resigned. He noted in
the minutes of one of their recent meetings where it was indicated they
would like to continue with five members, and in his conversation with
Mr. Peacock, he reiterated his suggestion that perhaps the Commission
would be more effective with three members. He also had spoken with
recruiting representatives of the various branches of the military services
and they are willing to have their displays at the Veterans Memorial
Building, and the leadership of VFW and American Legion also indicated
willingness to cooperate. Since there are two resignations at this time,
he felt this would be an appropriate time to reduce the Commission to
three members.
Council briefly discussed the recommendation, and suggested some expansion
of activities. City Attorney noted that the Commission is restricted as
to scope of its activities, and changes would require Code amendment.
Councilman Henderson felt the duties of this Commission could be incorporated
into another group, and moved that activities controlled by the Veterans
Memorial Commission be transferred to the Park and Recreation Commission,
seconded by Councilman Weymouth.
