320
Report and recommendation of Ordinance Review Committee regarding appeals for extension
of time to allow continued use of nonconforming signs.
Councilman Keckley, Chairman of the Ordinance Review Committee, reported that the
Committee was continuing to review with the owners the matter of nonconforming signs.
They had met with five additional applicants, and the Committee Minutes of July 75
1970 were submitted to Council.
Anderson's Auto Service, 135 Maple Street. Mr. Anderson had amended his request for
a one-year extension to a 2 -month period, and is obtaining bids to repaint his build-
ing and refurbish his signs to conform with the Sign Ordinance, which is expected
to be completed within the two months. Committee recommended approval. Councilman
Keckley moved to accept recommendation of the Ordinance Review Committee and approve
two-month extension of time, seconded by Councilman Weymouth and carried. (MINUTE
ORDER #70-138-A)
Willis Heating Co., 746 Maple Street. Committee recommended denial of extension for
non -conforming marquee, and approval of extension of time for painted wall sign to
August 31, 1970, by which time owner will have repainted the building and the sign will
be painted out. The marquee sign could be made to conform by moving it flush against
the building, and Committee did not recommend approval of extension for that aspect.
Councilman Keckley moved to grant extension of time to August 31, 1970, for correction
of the painted sign and to deny extension for the marquee, seconded by Councilman
Rhodes and carried. (MINUTE ORDER #70-138-B)
Rocky's, 715 E1 Camino Real. The present sign is 144 square feet in size where 50
square feet is allowed for the frontage the business has, and is too high. Committee
reviewed request for extension and could find no reason for approval, and therefore
recommended compliance with Sign Ordinance be required. Councilman Weymouth moved
to deny request for extension, seconded by Councilman Arnett and carried. (MINUTE
ORDER #70-138-C)
Redwood City Motors, 1903 E1 Camino Real. The owner, Mr. Cesasaro, requested a one-
year extension to amortize the sign, because of a recent investment of refurbishing
the sign within the past few months. He had not been aware of the Ordinance. The
objection to the sign was that it is combustible; however, Committee conceded that
it was in an area away from other buildings and the building was a block type not
apt to catch fire, and recommended extension to January 1, 1971. Councilman Peter-
sen moved to grant extension of time to January 1, 1971, seconded by Councilman
Rhodes and carried. (MINUTE ORDER #70-138-D)
Great Western Furniture, 1748 Broadway. This building has 460 sq. feet of sign
where 300 feet is permitted under the Ordinance. A sign in front flashes, and is
ten feet above the roof, both of which are also violations. Committee met with
Mr. Gelb and Mr. Sello, owners, who requested a ten-year extension, but could find
no reason to grant this length of extension. Owners indicated they would be at this
meeting in defense of their request.
