Milton Dunning , pertaining to her support of request for recreation <br /> center and noting the meeting with Mayor and City Manager on July 23 , <br /> Letter from Richard Hurych , of Redwood City Jaycees , <br /> regarding approval of resolution concerning estab - <br /> lishment of a youth center in " target area " <br /> Mayor Bury noted that he had submitted a report on his meeting with City Manager and <br /> the group fromthe Fair Oaks area , and read it in full . He added that he planned to <br /> designate three members of the Council to meet , with the idea of accelerating the <br /> proposal for recreation facilities and service . Since the article on the meeting <br /> appeared in the newspaper , has received num erous offers from persons willing to <br /> serve , as well as information regarding programs in other cities . <br /> Councilman Henderson stated she had also received telephone calls of similar nature , <br /> and suggested having Hoover School swimming pool remain open evenings , as well as to <br /> offer free swimming at night , <br /> Mayor Bury then requested that the group ' s spokesman step forward . <br /> Linda Stephens , Joyce Freeman and Shirley Frazier <br /> each spoke in turn , to the effect that there are <br /> no recreation facilities in their area , and that <br /> it was necessary to travel to other cities in the <br /> Bay area to find such facilities ; that they did <br /> not want to cause police problems , and that they <br /> needed something to keep them occupied . <br /> Mayor Bury named Councilmen Henderson and Rosselli , and himself as Chairman , to act <br /> as a committee to meet and recommend on this request , and asked for Council ratifi- <br /> cation of the appointments . <br /> Councilman Rosselli moved that Mayer Bury , Councilman Henderson and himself be named <br /> to serve as a Committee , seconded by Councilman Arnett and carried , ( MINUTE ORDER <br /> #69-152 ) Progress report requested for submittal in two weeks . ( Memo 7/29/69 ) <br /> Mayor Bury requested a statement from City Manager as to status of planned small play <br /> areas . City Manager advised that approximately four months ago the Park and Recrea- <br /> tion Commission had requested Staff to meet regarding vacant property within limits <br /> of Redwood City . One parcel which appeared feasible for use is located at rear of <br /> Gemco property , and owners were contacted , terms worked out for an agreement to be <br /> submitted to Council regarding an " instant park" , consisting of clearing off , in- <br /> stalling slides , swings , chutes , sand boxes and other play apparatus . All of this <br /> can be done on short notice , and funds are available for construction of such parks , <br /> with approval of Council , Costs would be relatively low , and little Staff time <br /> would be required , If Council desired , the matter can be placed on a future agenda . <br /> Ken Grimm, a Senior at San Francisco State College <br /> appeared on behalf of the group requesting recrea - <br /> tion facilities , and noted he had not attended that <br /> college last year because of the rioting , and is ac - <br /> tively working to assist the young people in the area <br /> of Westmoreland , where a large house has been rented <br /> with the view of using it for a youth center , He <br /> stated it was his wish to establish a rapport between <br /> the Police Department and neighborhood youth , and also <br /> hoped to meet some of the City officials . <br /> Mr , Clifford Boxley addressed the Council to request <br /> instructions as to procedure for placing matters on <br /> Council agenda , and this information was provided . <br /> Communication regarding proposed change of street name at Belmont In- <br /> terchange from Shoreway Road to Marriott Road received from City of <br /> 31 28 '69 <br />
