Al ' )£ Mayor Bury requested that the City Clerk read into the record letter received from Mrs . Dianne L . Milton Dunning , pertaining to her support of request for recreation center and noting the meeting with Mayor and City Manager on July 23 , Letter from Richard Hurych , of Redwood City Jaycees , regarding approval of resolution concerning estab - lishment of a youth center in " target area " Mayor Bury noted that he had submitted a report on his meeting with City Manager and the group fromthe Fair Oaks area , and read it in full . He added that he planned to designate three members of the Council to meet , with the idea of accelerating the proposal for recreation facilities and service . Since the article on the meeting appeared in the newspaper , has received num erous offers from persons willing to serve , as well as information regarding programs in other cities . Councilman Henderson stated she had also received telephone calls of similar nature , and suggested having Hoover School swimming pool remain open evenings , as well as to offer free swimming at night , Mayor Bury then requested that the group ' s spokesman step forward . Linda Stephens , Joyce Freeman and Shirley Frazier each spoke in turn , to the effect that there are no recreation facilities in their area , and that it was necessary to travel to other cities in the Bay area to find such facilities ; that they did not want to cause police problems , and that they needed something to keep them occupied . Mayor Bury named Councilmen Henderson and Rosselli , and himself as Chairman , to act as a committee to meet and recommend on this request , and asked for Council ratifi- cation of the appointments . Councilman Rosselli moved that Mayer Bury , Councilman Henderson and himself be named to serve as a Committee , seconded by Councilman Arnett and carried , ( MINUTE ORDER #69-152 ) Progress report requested for submittal in two weeks . ( Memo 7/29/69 ) Mayor Bury requested a statement from City Manager as to status of planned small play areas . City Manager advised that approximately four months ago the Park and Recrea- tion Commission had requested Staff to meet regarding vacant property within limits of Redwood City . One parcel which appeared feasible for use is located at rear of Gemco property , and owners were contacted , terms worked out for an agreement to be submitted to Council regarding an " instant park" , consisting of clearing off , in- stalling slides , swings , chutes , sand boxes and other play apparatus . All of this can be done on short notice , and funds are available for construction of such parks , with approval of Council , Costs would be relatively low , and little Staff time would be required , If Council desired , the matter can be placed on a future agenda . Ken Grimm, a Senior at San Francisco State College appeared on behalf of the group requesting recrea - tion facilities , and noted he had not attended that college last year because of the rioting , and is ac - tively working to assist the young people in the area of Westmoreland , where a large house has been rented with the view of using it for a youth center , He stated it was his wish to establish a rapport between the Police Department and neighborhood youth , and also hoped to meet some of the City officials . Mr , Clifford Boxley addressed the Council to request instructions as to procedure for placing matters on Council agenda , and this information was provided .
