2' 68
being the only other property owner involved . He advised of possibility of re-
location of Doulgas Avenue to a frontage road in a discussion state at present , until
it is fully determined if abandonment of a portion of Broadway is necessary , but
which is not related to these proceedings .
Mr . Owens advised how Douglas Avenue was used by their
operation for egress and ingress , and how proposals
being discussed could work a hardship on their operation .
He recommended a full master plan be made for proposals
being discussed before further action taken , and stated
their firm had even participated in such studies in other
areas where their operations were concerned . He stated
abandonment of this portion of Douglas would affect their
operation by not allowing two -way Access .
Councilman Petersen entered the meeting at 7 : 50 P . M .
City Manager explained Ampex had been studying how their proposed expansion plans
would affect traffic flow , and are now in process of further elaborating on traf -
fice plans if they should request abandonment of any portions of Broadway . He
also explained access to Sears from Broadway will not be affected except for their
not being able to go around double loop after construction starts .
Harold Hjertberg , Assistant Secretary of Ampex Corporation ,
confirmed statement that Douglas Avenue had been originally
installed as part of a subdivision to make lots accessible
to street frontages , but that entire land now owned by Ampex
as a single ownership and of their desire to develop this
parcel . He advised the potential alternates of other streets ,
frontage road , Broadway developments , etc . , is dependent on
this particular abandonment , but that with the cul-de -sac
arrangement proposed , Sears would retain frontage on Douglas
and access to Broadway as now .
In reply to questions as to effect on Ampex plans should this
public hearing be continued until further information obtained ,
Mr . Hjertberg advised they would be unable to proceed further
on their planning . He further advised no future planning en-
visioned by Ampex which did not include the interests and re -
quirements of Sears Roebuck , but present action only concerned
their own property .
Further discussion held between Mr . Hjertberg and Mr . Owens concerning planning
possibilities which would aid the Sears Roebuck operation, and assurances given
by Mr . Hjerrberg that should frontage road be constructed , there would be no
property loss to Sears as land would be replaced in kind , and all would be subject
to hearings and action by the Council .
Councilman Rosselli moved to close the public hearing , seconded by Councilman
Arnett .
Mr . Elmer Borgen , 263 Sylvan Way , owner of a welding shop
on Bay Road , expressed his doubts concerning improvements
proposed by Ampex and indicated his protest to abandonment
proceedings .
Motion to close the public hearing carried .
Councilman Weymouth moved to adopt RESOLUTION NO . 5912 ABANDONING PORTION OF DOUGLAS
AVENUE IN THE CITY OF REDWOOD CITY IN ACCORDANCE WITH PART 3 OF DIVISION 9 , STREETS
AND HIGHWAYS CODE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA , seconded by Councilman Henderson and
carried on roll call vote , Councilman Petersen abstaining because of not being
present during whole of public hearing .
REPORT OF BID OPENING , Gasoline Requirements , March 1 , 1969 , through June 30 , 1970 .
The following bids were received :
Premium Non- Premium Favored Nation
Atlantic -Richfield .2095 . 1905 Yes
Standard Oil , 2125 . 1925 Yes
Texaco , Inc . . 215 . 195 No
Union Oil Co . , 2225 . 205 ( no bond ) No
Phillips Petroleum . 23 . 205 it " No
FEB 24 '
