Civic Cultural Commission Page 3
Minutes of April 4, 2002
before next year's contest. The awards ceremony will take place at the start
of the May Commission meeting and will be held in the Council Chambers.
"Tis the Season
Commissioner Ball reported that this year's 'Tis the Season event will take
place on Saturday, December 7 and will go on rain or shine. The committee
is discussing ways to promote this year's program.
2002 Summer Concert Series
Commissioner Kushin reported the committee is proposing eight concerts to
be held weekly from June to August. Manager Jordana Schneiderman is
currently negotiating with various groups to perform at this year's concert
series.
Chairperson Dale announced the City Council awarded the Commission
$16,000 to be used towards the 2002 Live at the Plaza Series, formally the
Downtown Jazz Series. He stated that he is part of an ad-hoc committee
consisting of Vice Chairperson Douglas, Erin Raiser, Greg St. Claire, John
Anagnostou, and Mayor Dick Claire who are working on developing this
program. Chairperson Dale suggested that the Commission use $14,000 for
the program with the understanding that $2,000 would be used at part of the
2002-2003 budget. The committee would like to have eight concerts in June
and July in front of the Library and would also like to close off Middlefield
Road between Jefferson and Main Street to provide an entertainment area for
the concerts. He suggested that the Commission sponsor the series and take
the lead on this ad-hoc committee for the next few years. Chairperson Dale
announced the ad-hoc committee will begin to gather financial support and
that Erin Raiser will book the musical groups, and Greg St. Claire will work
with local downtown restaurants to sell food at the concerts.
Director Centeno expressed concern about moving the Commission's stage to
the downtown location and returning to the Municipal Services Center; lack of
available staff to handle this program; additional cost of staff time to set up
the concerts, remain during the concerts and to clean up after the concerts;
responsibility for producing flyers and publicity for event; negotiating
contracts with the bands; issuing checks to pay the bands; and the
Commission's involvement and participation with the concerts.
M/S Douglas/Ball: To adopt "Live at the Plaza" as a Civic Cultural
Commission sponsored event on a one year trial basis with
Chairperson Dale and Vice Chairperson Douglas as Commission
representatives and using the $16,000 allocated from the City
Council, understanding it will be added to the FY02-03 budget and
that there will be a post-series review.
Motion passed unanimously.
