have had to take seniors out on field trips and serve meals outside due to
work at the Center.
-Veterans Memorial Senior Center
Supervisor Mannia reported the Senior Center Advisory Council provides
the funds to offset costs of the lunches and to pay the salaries of the chef and
her assistants. Attendance in the program was 1,362 for May, 1,335 for June
and 1,359 for July. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, attendance is 100-110
people due to club meetings held at the Center. Other days during the week
have lower attendance, especially on Mondays. Commissioner Lloyd
provides bread and treats on certain days by collecting donations from
Safeway and Petrini's. Supervisor Mannia said she advised the Senior Center
Advisory Council to develop a Nutrition Committee to discuss their concerns
about our nutrition program and she is looking for someone with a nutrition
background to participate on the committee. The committee will be meeting
on August 15 at 2:00pm. She mentioned she is also trying to soften up the
look of the Redwood Room by getting some round tables and is considering
renting some round tables to see if it is worthwhile. Her goal is to strive for
quality at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center.
ITEM 5-COMMISSION 94-95 WORKPLAN
Chairperson Anthony suggested the following items for the workplan:
-Fixed Charges were discussed with the City Council at the study session
regarding items that affect needy seniors. He said we are not expecting a
blanket reduction in charges for all seniors, only those in need. He wants to
use volunteers.
-Housing. Chairperson Anthony wants to keep discussion alive on this issue.
What kind of waiting lists do the housing units have? We need to have a
contact person at each place and follow up regularly to maintain information
about what is available and what kind of waiting lists exist. Possible sites
include Casa de Redwood, Redwood Commons, Heron Court. Chairperson
Anthony said he would like a volunteer to take on the project to call sites and
follow up with them. He also would like someone to check up on the kinds
of housing available. All of the above information may be available through
Debbi Jones-Thomas's office and Superintendent Hartman will contact her to
obtain this information.
-Senior Centers are also a concern.
-Budget of the Veterans Memorial Senior Center needs clarification.
-Parking. There are concerns about the misuse of parking on the streets.
Chairperson Anthony would like to see information distributed to citizens
and have the laws upheld with Police Department cooperation. It was
suggested having the Police Department come and talk to the Senior Affairs
Commission to find out what the parking regulations are and what can be
done to enforce them. As the population of Redwood City increases, parking
problems also increase.
