Senior Affairs Commission Page 3 <br /> Minutes of Thursday, May 8, 1997 <br /> with Chairperson Walsh and the Redwood City Postmaster to discuss ways of <br /> identifying potential problems with isolated seniors. Postal employees will be <br /> given the TIES phone line to provide to senior customers when necessary. <br /> -Economic Development <br /> Commissioner Harrison reported she contacted four local restaurants <br /> regarding having a luncheon in the downtown area. The restaurants were: <br /> Pete's Harbor House-must pre-select from menu <br /> Court House Cafe-no pre-selection from menu; order and bill individually <br /> Franklin Street Cafe-can accommodate 30-35 people; outside tables; pre-select <br /> from menu; must arrive 11:30-11:45am <br /> Mime's-can accommodate 30-35 people but cannot seat as a group; noise level <br /> can be high during lunchtime <br /> The Commissioners discussed the various locations and the options they <br /> provided. They selected Thursday, July 17 at 11:30am at the Franklin Street <br /> Cafe as the date and site for the luncheon. <br /> Chairperson Walsh asked for any ideas of other workplan topics to be <br /> discussed at future meetings. Commissioner Moran suggested having a <br /> speaker from Redwood City 2000 update the Commission on their program. <br /> Superintendent Centeno announced Redwood City 2000 received a $90,000 <br /> grant from the Hancock Foundation for a two year period. <br /> Commissioner Newell reported on meeting with Pam Thornberg who has <br /> just written a book. He stated that a study was done recently which showed <br /> that Redwood City is a high risk community for heart disease. He said Pam is <br /> working on a healthy heart project involving seniors and children and <br /> obtaining matching funds for the project. Superintendent Centeno <br /> confirmed that Manager Griffith is coordinating the "Heart Smart" grant and <br /> is trying to obtain matching funds from Sequoia and Kaiser Hospitals. The <br /> project would be a community garden behind the NFL Alumni Museum <br /> building which would focus on nutrition. This item will be placed on the <br /> June agenda for further discussion and possible guest speakers. <br /> ANNOUNCEMENTS <br /> -Commissioner Anthony invited everyone to a "Measure A" breakfast on <br /> May 10 at the Senior Center from 10:30am-12:30pm. <br /> -Commissioner Newell announced the Age Center Alliance will be <br /> sponsoring a senior information event on May 15-16 from 9am-4pm at <br /> Burgess Park in Menlo Park. There will be several guest speakers and <br /> presentations on senior issues. <br />
