Senior Affairs Commission Page 3
Minutes of Thursday,August 10, 2000
-Outreach, Public Awareness
Chairperson Moran reported on attending the July 26 meeting of the Park and
Recreation Commission and the discussion on Stafford Park.
-Strategic Planning Committee Update
Commissioner Borgens reported on the status of the committee's work with a
facilitator and the process they are following. A needs questionnaire has
been provided to all department staff and the results are being tabulated. A
questionnaire will also go out to our boards and commissions. The
committee members would like to obtain an assessment of the community on
the services we provide and have a goal of 500 responses from different
groups. The responses will help the committee to define areas for
development of future objectives. Commissioner Borgens also stated that
she interviewed some seniors members in the community about what the
department could do and received the following responses: many seniors
babysit their grandchildren during the day and they need babysitting services
so they can go to the senior center; adult day care, education and exercise.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
-Interviews for Senior Affairs Commission applicants on August 14;
appointments to be made by the City Council on August 28.
-Commissioner Borgens spoke about senior housing issues and asked that
this be placed on the September agenda.
-Superintendent Centeno spoke about the interim park use policy at Stafford
Park and the work the department has done in response to neighbor
requests. Currently, a recreation leader is at Stafford on Saturdays and
Sundays from 7:00am to 3:00pm to make sure people comply with the new
policy. She noted that the Park and Recreation Commission and the
department will be looking at rules for neighborhood parks and community
parks. Superintendent Centeno spoke about two requests made to the Civic
Cultural Commission from neighbors to consider moving the summer concert
series from Stafford Park to another venue. She explained the Cultural
Commission decided to leave the two remaining concerts for this year at
Stafford and agreed to wait until the new Commissioners have been seated
before making any further decisions. The Cultural Commissioners also
wanted to interview surrounding neighbors to find out how they felt about the
concerts at Stafford Park. Chairperson Moran and Commissioners Harrison
and L.Walsh volunteered to assist in this process. Commissioner L.Walsh
spoke in favor of leaving the concerts at Stafford Park. Chairperson Moran
stated that she was on the Cultural Commission when the concerts in the
park series were held in different parks every two weeks. The Cultural
Commission discovered that concerts held at Stafford Park had the best
attendance and the decision was made to have all the concerts at Stafford
Park.
