Senior Affairs Commission Page 3 <br /> Minutes of Thursday,March 8,2001 <br /> ITEM 2 - CONFIRM COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS ON WORKPLAN FOR <br /> 2001 <br /> The following committee assignments were confirmed: <br /> Transportation - Commissioners Moran and Carpe <br /> Housing - Commissioners Borgens and M. Walsh <br /> Public Awareness - Chairperson Harrison, Commissioners Grove and L. Walsh <br /> ITEM 3 - WORKPLAN UPDATES <br /> -Economic Development Luncheon <br /> Commissioner M. Walsh reported that Jerry Fuchs is confirmed as our guest <br /> speaker for our luncheon to be held on March 22 at 12:00noon at the <br /> Veterans Memorial Senior Center. Cost is $8.00 per person and all proceeds <br /> will benefit the Nutrition Program. Manager Griffith announced that <br /> Commissioner Grove is writing a monthly article for the "Sentinel" Newsletter <br /> which luncheon information was included. <br /> -Housing <br /> Commissioner Borgens felt the Commission needs to determine the need for <br /> affordable senior housing and spoke about a possible senior housing program <br /> and rent control and asked to bring this to the next meeting. <br /> Council Member Pierce suggested the Commission work with the Housing and <br /> Human Concerns Committee, Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center and <br /> Redwood City 2020 on the issue of housing. She suggested hosting <br /> "conversations" with the community to discuss housing needs. <br /> Ethel Robinson spoke about a "jitney bus" which operated in Redwood City <br /> many years ago and requested one for Redwood City. <br /> Commissioner Borgens thanked Council Member Pierce for working to clear <br /> up a mis-quote in a local publication. Council Member Pierce spoke about the <br /> trial bus program which will be transporting Redwood Shores residents to the <br /> train station. Manager Griffith discussed the usage of the accessible van by <br /> the Senior Center and stated it is not working well because seniors cannot <br /> negotiate the steps into the van, and also do not feel comfortable using the <br /> lift. Staff is looking at other options. <br /> ITEM 4 - MEETING AT SANDPIPER COMMUNITY CENTER <br /> Secretary Monroe reported that the April 12 Commission meeting will be held <br /> at Sandpiper Community Center in the large conference room. Notices are <br /> being sent out to local newspapers and newsletters to advertise the meeting <br /> location in Redwood Shores. <br />
