240 MINUTES OF REGULAR MEETING REDWOOD CITY COUNCIL DECEMBER 7 , 1936 S o ' clock P . M. Upon roll call , the following Councilmen were present : Mayor , Paul A. McCarthy , L. C. Christensen , J . M. Eva, E. A. Fletcher , R. N. Jones , G. W. McNulty and City Clerk , B . E. Myers . Absent : Councilman Wm. Hohn. The minutes of the meeting of November 16 and the special meeting of November 20 , 1936 , were approved on motion of Councilman Christensen , seconded by Councilman Fletcher . In a letter to the Council , the Standard Oil Company of California , by J. C . Wagner , District Sales Manager , asked permission , in changing the location of its service station building at the corner of El Camino Real and Claremont Avenue , to make certain changes and improvements to the present building rather than to move the present building farther back on the lot , which removal is necessitated by the widening of El Camino Real . Inasmuch as the company would be entitled to move the present building back and there seemed no reason for compelling the company to comply with the requirements of the fire zone restrictions , permission was given as desired , on motion of Councilman Eva, seconded by Councilman McNulty. Another demand was made by Eugenie Ruellan that the City pay the judgment of $2 , 850 awarded to her for injuries sustained in an accident in collision with one of the City cars driven by W. H. Thorpe . Ordered filed. In connection with insurance on taxis , the Clerk asked the Council whether it was neces- sary that the insurance policies be filed with him or whether it would be acceptable to have certificate of insurance filed in place of the policy. The City Attorney was of the opinion that the certificate would be sufficient , provided it indicated the required information about the cars used in the business ; otherwise , he con- sidered it would be preferable to have the policies themselves . Mrs . Anna Nelson asked the Council if something could be done to clean up Union Cemetery. It was explained that the City had no title to the property and that the estimated cost heretofore had been excessive . However , the Council assured Mrs. Nelson it agreed with her that the cemetery property should be cleaned and as a step toward that , on motion of Councilman Jones , seconded by Councilman Eva, the City Attorney was directed to ask that Governor Merriam issue to the City a Grant Deed conveying title to the property, that a suit to quiet title might be entered into by the City and the fee to the property rest in the City , the City Engineer being asked to fur- nish description of the property. On motion of Councilman Eva, seconded by Councilman Fletcher , it was decided to appro- priate from the Unbudgeted Reserve Fund $100 to be used by the Chief of Police to investigate alleged gambling in Redwood City . On motion of Councilman Fletcher , seconded by Councilman Eva , the City Attorney was directed to have ready and deliver to the Council at its next meeting a definite written opinion as to the legality of certain games of chance now operated by the theatres in Redwood City and also his opinion as to the prospect of a reasonably
