H . E. Higgins , addressed the Council concerning a permission given to Julius Smith in September ,
1935 , to divide various lots in Blocks 39 , 44 , and 45 , of Redwood Highlands , into what
would have been at that time 47-ft . frontage . Mr . Higgins , supported by W. H . Girvin ,
asked the Council to rescind its action in permitting such a breakdown of these lots
because the plan of Mr . Smith fell through and nothing had been done , and buyers had
purchased lots in these blocks with a 70-ft , frontage and they and other owners desired
to maintain that size of lot . Julius Smith , to whom the original permission had been
granted , indicated his willingness to have it withdrawn. Therefore , on motion of Coun-
of September 16 , 1935 , affecting Lots 6 , g , 9 , and 11 , in Block 39 , Lots 6 , g , 10 , 12 ,
authorized to interview the Veterans of Foreign Wars and to arrange for the use of the
Veterans ' Hall for a Pet and Hobby Show , and to assure the Veterans , in the name of the
Council , that no damage would be done . The Clerk was instructed to write 0 . K. Whitten--
burg that Councilman Fletcher would be present Thursday night to discuss the matter.
On motion of Councilman Eva , seconded by Councilman Christensen , J . C . Youngberg was authorized
to incur the expense of a man to visit Marysville , Auburn , and other cities to pick up
1915 Act Bonds , on the same basis as the trip to Los Angeles .
Councilman Fletcher , seconded. by Councilman Hohn , proposed that the wages of Roger Walsh , as
head gardener , beginning April 1 , be raised on a day basis to an amount not to exceed
$170 a month, Motion carried , with Councilman Eva and McNulty voting "No" .
Following this motion , there was considerable discussion about the pay increases for Roger
Walsh and Allan McKay. Finally , Councilman Fletcher , seconded by Councilman McNulty,
proposed that the City Attorney be instructed to draw up an amendment to the salary
ordinance , fixing the salary of Allan McKay , as poundman , at $150 , and that of Roger
Walsh , as head gardener , at $175 . Carried.
This was the time set for hearing in the matter of the investigation by the Council of the
City of Redwood City of the use and occupancy of the premises at 35 Hudson Street , Redwood
City. Mrs . Mabel Appelman , the owner of the property , Albert Lascy , the Real Estate Agent
who sold the property , and Peter Klitsch , a plumber who did work on the premises , having
been subpoenaed , were present to testify and did testify. Mrs . Appelman , under oath ,
testified that she had not operated the premises as a hospital or convalescent home and
did not intend to do so , and both Mr . Klitsch and Mr. Lascy stated in their testimony
that there was no evidence to believe that the premises were , or would be , used for such
purposes . The Council decided to take the matter under. advisement .
