From:CD-Jessica Manzi
To:CD-Stacy Nicol
Subject:FW: Farm Hill Boulevard Pilot Project Update
Date:Tuesday, October 18, 2016 8:55:57 AM
Attachments:signature.asc
Jessica Manzi, PE
Community Development Department
Phone: (650)780-7372
-----Original Message-----
From: David Wolfskill [] Sent: Monday, October 17, 2016
8:30 PM
To: CD-Jessica Manzi <jmanzi@redwoodcity.org>
Subject: Re: Farm Hill Boulevard Pilot Project Update
Your note reminded me: Of the signs intended to alert westbound travelers on Jefferson that the right lane now
(only) goes to Highland -- the view of that sign (from the right lane of Jefferson, as one is stopped at the Alameda de
las Pulgas) is partially obscured by a palm frond.
One of the (other) signs has no words, but indicates that the road makes a left-hand turn, and that one should slow to
20 MPH; that's sort of OK, but it's misleading, as it fails to provide a hint as to the (rather
separate) fate of the right lane. I think this sign should be replaced by one that depicts both lanes -- keep a left-
turning arrow, but also show that the right lane (only) goes straight (or slightly to the right).
I also find the wording of the 2 signs that have words a bit ...
unexpected. I'm not recalling exactly what they say just now, but the kind of wording I would expect would be
(e.g.):
*THRU TRAFFIC MERGE LEFT
*RIGHT LANE MUST TURN RIGHT
(I think one of the signs mentions "exit," which seems out-of-place on a surface street.)
Of course, it's also important to avoid over-signage. :-}
Finally: I know at least one person who, when driving in the right lane toward Highland, fails to merge far enough to
the right to miss the bike lane after it crosses the lane bound for Highland, using the claim that there's insufficient
room to do otherwise.
Thanks again for your efforts!
Peace,
david
--
David H. Wolfskill
Those who would murder in the name of God or prophet are blasphemous cowards.
.
8.A. - Page 49
