200
pressed with the Division of Highway Engineers at the next presentation before the
State Highway Commission in Sacramento on June 22nd. City Manager also advised that
Division of Highway Engineers had been informed of the necessity for a pedestrian
overpass across Woodside Road at Washington School, as he felt problem of getting
school children across this expressway at this point far exceeds problem at Middle-
field, and should be discussed in preliminary planning steps. He affirmed his
strong belief that a positive means of getting school children through the high
speed traffic was essential, but that there were no funds budgeted for this purpose
in the 1966-67 budget.
City Manager also warned of possibility, should one overpass be built at this point,
other areas along the expressway would expect similar treatment. He stated every
effort would be made to explore solutions other than overpasses to insure these
were not the only answers for pedestrian crossings, either by additional signali-
zation or by barriers.
Councilman Granger felt State should have extended overpass over Middlefield as
most of Council felt this would be part of construction when City contributed sum
of $1,000,000. He also asked that Staff investigate financing of overpass on
Bayshore at Dore Avenue in San Mateo, and how it is used prior to June 22nd meeting
in Sacramento. Councilman Petersen suggested this same information might be
obtained as to the overpass on Bayshore at Menlo Park. (Memo 6/14/66)
The following appeared to urge Council's action for overpass at Middlefield -Wood-
side intersection, and a Middlefield Road crossing:
Mrs. Joan Thyfault, 128 Manzanita Street
Mrs. Virginia Daugherty, 519 Spruce Street
Mrs. Hauch, President of Hoover PTA
Council was also questioned if there would be guards provided during summer months
in view of summer recreation program planned by City at Hoover School. City Manager
and Police Chief stated this had not been considered but would be investigated.
Mr. N. M. McKenzie, 3470 Michael Dr., reminded Council
of swimming pool to be constructed at Hoover School
resulting in additional attendance by children across
this intersection.
Discussion held on possible financing and funds which could be made available should
State decline to finance this overpass. Councilman Henderson moved that this item
be again placed on next month's Study Meeting (July 11th) and Council be prepared
to make some decision on resolving this issue, seconded by Councilman Keckley and
carried. Mayor requested the investigation also include need for crossing -guards
during summer recreation program and steps be taken to place guards if found
necessary. (MINUTE ORDER #66-127)
City Manager stated availability of gas tax monies would be discussed at Council
Budget Study Meeting on June 16th.
