6285
Councilman Petersen asked that Council permit representative of Gemco Corporation to
present their sign problem at this time. Councilman Petersen expressed regret that
Sign Committee had not been able to meet because of vacation absence of Councilman
Keckley, Chairman of the Sign Committee, resulting in lack of a recommendation at
this time. He stated the wall sign requested by Gemco had been approved, but problem
remained of the free-standing sign proposed at this site, as to height requested beyond
35' maximum and considerable more sign area than permitted. He stated Committee had
denied any further consideration of increasing 35' height, but did review a formula
which had been developed by the Building Department for increasing sign area based
on frontage and depth of property. This would still require a sign ordinance amendment.
Dick Demerjian, of Ad Art, contractor for proposed
sign for Gemco, advised they would abandon their
request for additional height, but did seek considera-
tion of enlargement of sign area due to Gemco build-
ing being at extreme rear of large site. He stated
original request was for 290 sq. ft. area when ordinance
allows only 150 sq. ft. He urged a compromise from
these figures to 225 sq. ft. The sign was described
as being plastic illuminated from interior with no
flashing lights.
Mr. Demerjian stressed urgency of action because of
Gemco opening proposed for Semptember lst.
Councilman Petersen stated since there is no variance procedure to Sign Ordinance,
an amendment had been proposed based on the formula submitted by Building Department
and he requested this be on Agenda for action next week. It was pointed out that
the Agenda item should include the proposed ordinance amendment, Sign Committee
recommendation, and Staff report for Council's information.
Councilman Granger moved this matter be referred back to the Sign Committee for
report and recommendation, seconded by Councilman Henderson and carried. (MINUTE ORDER
##66-181)
Councilman Bury reviewed the career of the late Vincent Rambo, who served the City on
both the Park and Recreation and Planning Commissions, and moved to adjourn in his
memory by adoption of RESOLUTION NO. 5120 COMMEMORATING MEMORY OF VINCENT RAMBO,
seconded by Councilman Granger and carried on roll call vote, Councilmen Keckley and
Rosselli being noted absent. Meeting adjourned at 9:15 P. M.
HELEN C. MOORE, City Clerk
I
