266
Minutes of Regular Weekly Study Meeting
Redwood City Council
August 15, 1966 7:30 p.m.
Meeting called to order at 7:30 P. M. by Mayor Herkner.
Mayor Herkner discussed an adjourned meeting on the fifth Monday of this month, parti-
cularly because of no meeting on September 5th. Consensus of opinion indicated
meeting schedule depended upon Council's actions at regular meeting on proposed
ordinances and should be discussed later.
Discussion of Woodside Overpass recommendations by City Manager postponed until
regular meeting.
Councilman Keckley, Chairman of Sign Committee, reported on extensive study made on
area dimensions for free-standing signs and their intention to recommend present
Sign Ordinance not be changed in this respect, as Committee felt 150 sq. ft. was
adequate. Councilman Bury questioned effect of this recommendation to Gemco's
signs. Councilman Granger advised their one sign on the building had been
approved but no actual plan had been submitted for their free-standing sign,
merely request for enlarged area of sign over that of present ordinance. Council-
man Keckley stated if an increase made in area a precedent would be set for in-
creasing all others and Committee's survey of present free-standing signs did
not indicate change desirable.
Councilman Bury questioned whether other amendments had been considered for
other aspects of present Sign Ordinance and was advised Committee would continue
reviewing Ordinance for possible changes.
Councilman Keckley, Chairman of "ad hoc" Committee on Cigarettes and Hotel -Motel
taxes, reported Committee had no recommendation to make at this time for or against
this proposed tax, particularly in view of Councilman Rosselli's absence, but
recommended discussion should be allowed on this subject during regular meeting.
Councilman Keckley reported this same situation was true concerning recommendation
for the hotel -motel tax.
Councilman Bury questioned proposed .02¢ tax by City and cigarette machine mark-ups.
City Manager reminded Council members of the groundbreaking ceremonies to be held
for Multi -Purpose Building in Community Park on August 16th, at 10 a.m.
Councilman Bury questioned "aroma" still apparent in the City and of his own investi-
gation in trying to find the source. Councilman Granger felt press should be
notified of Staff's attempts to overcome the problem. City Manager advised he
had contacted Jenks and Adamson and their contention odor did not stem from sewage
treatment plant but probably from across the Bay due to unusual prevailing wind
conditions, but of Staff's continuing efforts to track down the source for a
solution.
Councilman Bury submitted a clipping from the eastern edition Wall Street Journal on
Marine World and asked copies be made for the Council.
