Councilman Petersen explsined his reasons for opposing this bond measure and <br />declining to support Council's decision to act in this matter. Councilman <br />Henderson asked if anyone present from School District cared to present their <br />facts regarding this school bond issue, as she felt misunderstanding of certain <br />facts prevailed. <br />Dr. Joseph Grimes, Superintendent of Redwood City Elementary <br />School District, outlined purpose and need of bond issue and <br />urged Council and Community to approve it. <br />William Oeser, 630 Roosevelt presented facts and figures in <br />opposition to the bond issue. <br />William Rhodes, 82 Wheeler Ave., past President of Redwood <br />City Teachers' Association, discussed points made by Mr. Oeser <br />- concerning teacher's salaries in the community. <br />Councilman Henderson felt records should indicate that since two opposing sets <br />of facts concerning various points had been submitted relative to this bond <br />issue, she recognized those submitted by Superintendent of School District as being <br />factural and accurate, and also stated she felt it appropriate that City government <br />recognize and support such City issues as proposed in this instance. Motion <br />carried on roll call vote, Councilman Petersen voting no, Councilman Rosselli being <br />noted absent. <br />Dr. Grimes thanked Council for action supporting the bond issue. <br />COMMUNICATIONS: <br />Communication from John Erreca, Director of Public Works and <br />Administrative Officer, California Highway Commission, advising <br />Council of Commissions' voting to not grant the request of <br />City of San Francisco PUC that the location of the Junipero <br />Serra Freeway in San Mateo County be changed and of their <br />having reaffirmed the modified adopted Route. <br />City Clerk also noted that the full transcript which had been <br />included with this communication was on file for Council's <br />review as it was too lengthy for reproduction <br />Dr. Joseph Grimes, Jr., City Superintnedent of Redwood City <br />School District, advising Council of action taken by the District <br />Board of Education, at the request of City's Planning Director, <br />endorsing the proposed "Parks and Recreation Element" of the <br />Redwood City General Plan, after review. <br />Notification from Carl A. Ondry, President, Chamber of Commerce <br />that the Traffic and Highway Committee of the Chamber strongly <br />urges the Board of Supervisors of the County meet with the City <br />Council to resolve their differences on the engineering plans for <br />the widening of Woodside Road, so that both jurisdictions could <br />present to the State Highway Commission and Department, an agreed <br />upon plan for the project. <br />Councilman Henderson questioned whether any planning had been commenced along <br />lines of this request. City Manager advised resolution adopted by the Board of <br />Supervisors approving the widening plan had been submitted to the State which <br />had agreed with Council's approved plan, with the exception that opening of median <br />at Belmont Street had been recommended with request when decision made by the <br />State on this point that City be notified.
