136 <br />Further discussion was held concerning the implications of the proposed bill for <br />statewide cigarette tax which is a part of a very complex tax and revenue bill, and <br />need to strongly oppose this proposed section of the bill. Councilman Bury moved to <br />accept Committee's Legislative report as submitted, seconded by Councilman Granger <br />and carried. ( MINUTE ORDER #67-140) <br />Mayor Herkner reported briefly on his recent attendance at the Mayor's Conference held <br />in Hawaii and the benefits received from having met with Mayors of other cities in <br />the United States, and discussing mutual problems. He stated his pride in indica- <br />tions which were evident that Pacific Coast far ahead of other cities in the nation, <br />with Redwood City in the vanguard of cities on the Pacific Coast. He reported that <br />Mayor of Hartford, Connecticut, a corporation attorney, had noted great interest in <br />City's Redwood Shores project and had stated the recent bond prospectus prepared for <br />sale of Project's bonds had been one of the best he had ever seen. <br />He also noted that at the conference held four years ago, 50% of cities objected to <br />applying for Federal funds, and how it was evident at this meeting of a decided change <br />in this respect. He recommended again Council do all that is necessary to apply <br />for Federal funds for Open Space and other capital improvement necessities. Staff recommended <br />that the bid now be awarded to the low bidder, Freeman-Sondgroth, in the amount <br />of $178,879.29. <br />Councilman Henderson moved to adopt RESOLUTION NO. 5399 AWARDING CONTRACT FOR CON- <br />STRUCTION OF FARM HILL BOULEVARD EXTENSION, PHASE II; REJECTING ALL OTHER BIDS <br />RECEIVED; AUTHORIZING EXECUTION OF CONTRACT FOR SAID WORK; AND, DIRECTING RETURN OF <br />SECURITY DEPOSITS, seconded by Councilman Bury and carried on roll call vote, Coun- <br />cilman Keckley being noted absent. <br />REPORT OF BID OPENING, Exterior painting of 3 steel water storage units, Cambridge and <br />Wilmington Water Stations.
