He stated his concurrence with City Manager's recommendation that <br />no change be made in membership of the Board of Review. He also advised that all <br />cases in recent years had been settled at Staff level without necessity of Board <br />action. <br />Councilman Keckley indicated his agreement with recommendation that, because of <br />consequences possible by Board action, membership should remain as duty of Depart- <br />ment Heads concerned. Action deferred to regular meeting. <br />Street Signs. City Manager advised Council of meeting held with Mrs. Ray Spangler <br />to discuss possibility of contracting services of an industrial designer to <br />prepare designs for distinctive street signs in Redwood City, similar to such other <br />cities as Carmel and Monterey. He advised this suggestion had been made as a re- <br />sult of a Centennial Committee recommendation. He reported on contact that had been <br />made with Mr. Bill Hyde, a nationally known industrial designer, for submission <br />of a proposal for new street name designs together with bracket and holders, <br />which had been received and submitted to Council indicating a minimum fee of <br />$2,000 for his services. <br />City Manager stated it would be his recommendation, if Council approved, to <br />proceed with the project in order to have signs designed, manufactured, and <br />installed in at least the downtown section of the City as part of the Centennial <br />year. City Manager also advised of the further investigation he had made on <br />how, from design, signs could be made by City staff with lower costs than if <br />ordered in complete form. <br />Councilman Petersen questioned Mr. Hyde's statements concerning new design for <br />Redwood Shores not included in this proposal for City, and if design was patent- <br />able. City Manager advised implications concerning design exclusively for <br />City's use would have to be reviewed and stated also he didn't believe Mr. Hyde <br />fully understood that Redwood Shores is a part of Redwood City. <br />Councilman Henderson questioned whether program included standardization <br />throughout the City and if cost estimates were available. City Manager stated <br />the design is needed first in order to obtain cost estimates, but standardi- <br />zation for signs is intended thoughout the City and to include Redwood Shores. <br />Councilman Granger questioned amount of present investment in signs throughout <br />the City. He also made suggestion for tie-in of a new design to uniform letter- <br />heads for the City. Councilman Bury indicated his approval of initiating such <br />a program for new street signs during the City's Centennial. <br />Councilman Keckley further questioned fees proposed by Mr. Hyde. City Manager <br />assured Council he would hold proposal to•the $2,000 minimum fee. Councilman <br />Granger again expressed his concern for the inventory of streets signs now in <br />place. City Manager stated he would get an estimate of the inventory now on hand <br />
