48 <br />Engineering Design Aspects. Director of Public Works described from illustration <br />three basic cross sections proposed of the roadway starting at Five Points and <br />ending at the Alameda: Five Points to Rutherford -100' wide road, consisting of <br />two 121 driving lanes, 16' median barrier, 8' parking lane, and 91 sidewalk. He <br />stated additional right-of-way required would be 17' as now proposed, some dedications <br />already having been received. <br />Rutherford to Kentucky - 120' right of way, consisting of two 441 roadways, 16' <br />median, 8' parking lanes either side, 8' sidewalks on either side. The service <br />road through this section to be included as part of the new roadway design; Ken- <br />tucky to Alameda - (frontage road to remain with existing landscaping and fencing), <br />consisting of two 33' roadways, 16' median, 9' sidewalk on South side, no sidewalk <br />on North side as not being necessary with existing sidewalk abutting residential <br />area, 8' parking lane. <br />He further described in detail the left turn lanes provided along the roadway, <br />together with the signalization proposed for Hudson Street, Valota, Massachusetts, <br />and the Alameda. Department of Public Works explained why each of these inter- <br />sections had been chosen to be the natural points for traffic control. <br />Traffic considerations. Police Chief stated of all aspects to be considered for this <br />improvement of Woodside Road traffic safety of utmost importance, and illustrated <br />problems presently caused by cross streets not intersecting each other on direct <br />alignment. He also explained how left turn channelizations for storage lanes <br />varied in different intersections, not by arbitrary design, but only after lengthy <br />study and by specific standards, basically based on speed limit presumably to be <br />set by the State at 35 miles per hour. <br />He stated one exception to this probable speed limit would be at Washington School <br />as laws governing speed limits in this instance stated 25 miles per hour while <br />school in session. Police Chief also pointed out problems which he felt would <br />still exist even after completion of the entire project in this area with its <br />median barrier and signalization at Hudson, because of the probability that child- <br />ren from Washington School and residents of large apartment in this section from <br />Hudson to Hess Road, would still attempt to cross Woodside to reach shopping center <br />unless a more formidable restriction used with barrier, such as fencing. <br />Police Chief stressed importance of use of barriers for safety feature, particularly <br />` <br />on Woodside because of intersection streets not aligning. He also described the <br />I <br />interim signalization, channelization points, and parking restrictions being <br />planned for the intersection at Hudson and Woodside until widening improvements <br />constructed and permanent signalization possible. He also discussed possibility of <br />optional design still being discussed for section between Orchard and Horgan <br />because of the funeral chapel and its need for traffic control Signalization <br />and traffic flow patterns detailed for Valota Road and study still being made <br />in this section because of the churches involved with their access and egress to <br />parking areas on Woodside Road. The Chief expressed the hope that the churches <br />would change their main access to Valota Road. <br />
