City Manager's report to Council stated $13,000 included in the current
Budget for construction of two new tennis courts at the Andrew Spinas Play-
ground. It has now been found, because of land area limitations, the courts
cannot be constructed side by side. To construct them end-to-end would re-
quire more land and additional money. He reported that Recreation Director
had suggested that Council authorize construction of only one tennis court
and a hard top area adjacent thereto for use as a practice court.
City Manager further amplified'his report by stating additional land area
for side by side construction would be required from Ampex Corp., owner of the
abutting property, and from discussing this point with them, they had indi-
cated tentatively they would be willing to grant a revocable permit only for
use of the land. It was also pointed out 10' fencing which would be required
and the setbacks required along Second Avenue further curtail land area origin-
ally thought available. Costs of present plan being recommended; possible
disadvantages of adding a practice court adjacent to regulation tennis court;
cost of future lighting of courts; possibility that a further review by Ampex
Corp. might be made because of advantages which might result to their own
employees for using this facility were discussed at length.
Recreation Director advised revised plan had been recommended because layout
of two courts had proven fact that land insufficient as it now stands, but
if property is available, two courts would be preferred.
After discussion of original motion, both maker and second agreed to withdraw
their original motion in favor of recommendation made by Councilman Henderson
to refer this matter back to City Manager to permit a further contact with
Ampex Corp, to see if anything further could be worked out for use of the re-
quired 18' of their property with some kind of guarantee as to length of time
which might be allowed in order that the two full size tennis courts might be
considered instead of the revised plan. City Manager assured Council he would
again contact Ampex Corp. to see if anything more advantageous to theCity could
be arranged. (Memo 3/12/68)
Feasibility Report on Main Library Rest Rooms. Staff report stated Keller and Dasek-
ing, Architects, had completed their preliminary plans to establish feasibility
of constructing two rest rooms and a janitorial storage room at the Main Library.
Report indicated installation of restrooms would involve also relocation and
rearrangement of work areas within the Library main lobby and that an additional
$7,000 will be needed besides the $15,000 presently budgeted if project is
approved by Council, as total estimated cost now reported to be $21,675.00.
City Librarian introduced Library Board members present and advised Mr. Daseking,
consulting architect, was also present to further detail the report made by
their firm concerning this project.
439
wwii'g
